Mexico was rocked by violent protests Sunday by pro-abortion feminists demanding that the government legalize abortion on demand.

In Mexico City, one protester was caught on video throwing a firebomb at a small group of men conducting a counter-protest against abortion, Yahoo News reports. At least 65 people were injured during the violence in Mexico City, including a female journalist who sustained second-degree burns, Reuters reports.

Journalist Alejandro Bermudez shared a video of the firebomb incident on Twitter:

Other parts of the country saw violent pro-abortion protests as well.

The protests took place on International Women’s Day, which focuses on a variety of issues, but legalizing the killing of unborn babies in abortions was at the center of many of the protests. Most Central and South American countries protect the right to life for unborn babies.

Much of the violence was directed toward Catholic churches, government buildings and monuments. ACI Prensa, a Catholic Spanish news outlet, reported about vandalism and other violence at the Hermosillo Cathedral in Sonora, the Iglesia Cathedral in Campeche, the Church of the Beguinage and the Minor Seminary and the School Motolinia, and a monument in Guadalajara.

Two videos show feminists trying to break into the Hermosillo Cathedral in Sonora while families were celebrating Mass. Frightened children can be seen trying to shelter themselves from the violence while others barricade the church doors with pews. Meanwhile, the abortion activists outside can be seen smashing in windows and trying to break down the doors.

International news outlets also reported on the violence in Mexico and central and South America. In Santiago, Chile, 19 police officers were injured during the pro-abortion protest there, according to Reuters. In Mexico City, Reuters reported abortion activists also smashed vehicle windows, vandalized government buildings with graffiti and threw homemade bombs at policewomen.

Violence by pro-abortion protesters has become increasingly common. Last September, protesters in Mexico City tried to burn down a Catholic cathedral and a government building during a protest demanding legalized abortion. That same month, Swiss pro-life advocates were met with violence during their peaceful March for Life, as were pro-life advocates and politicians in the Australian state of New South Wales as its legislature debated a radical pro-abortion bill.

LifeNews.com recorded more than 100 reports of assault, vandalism, harassment and other incidents targeting pro-life advocates in 2019. Our news outlet began tracking these reports after pro-life organizations expressed alarm about an uptick in violence in recent years.
