California Gov. Gavin Newsom Wants to Stop Euthanizing Animals, But Aborting Babies is OK

When it comes to abortion, Democrats like California Governor Gavin Newsom are just hypocrites.

The pro-abortion Democrat governor has been working to dismantle human rights through his abortion advocacy and support of assisted suicide for years. But he is pushing a state budget that will allocate $50 million towards protecting pets from euthanasia and promoting animal adoptions.

Newsom’s budget plan includes $50 million in taxpayer funds for animal shelters.

As the Sacramento Bee newspaper reports “Specifically, Newsom’s budget calls for a $50 million one-time general fund allocation to the UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program to develop a grant program for animal shelters, with a goal of helping local communities “achieve the state’s policy goal that no adoptable or treatable dog or cat should be euthanized,” according to the budget summary.”

“We want to be a no-kill state,” Newsom said, referring to animal euthanasia.

Kate Hurley, head of the UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program, which would oversee the funds proposed by the governor, was exited about the funding.

Back in January, Hurley told The Bee that Newsom’s proposal is “not a trivial investment,” that it could allow her program to help struggling shelters in poorer communities to turn things around by attracting new volunteers, grants and donations.

Hurley has a heavy lift ahead of her. While California euthanasia numbers are down, there is still a significant number of healthy, adoptable animals being put down in the Golden State. In 2016, the most recent year for which there’s public data, the state euthanized more than 150,000 animals.

While Newsom is concerned about 150,000 animals, he is completely unmoved by the 132,680 babies who were killed in abortions in 2017.

The governor’s views on human killing, however, are the exact opposite. In October, Newsom signed a bill to expand the killing of unborn babies in abortions across California. The new law requires all public colleges and universities to provide abortions free to students, even though California already has some of the least restrictive abortion laws in the U.S.

He also supports assisted suicide, which is legal in California. The law allows elderly people and people with disabilities to receive a lethal dose of medication from a doctor to kill themselves. Shockingly, Newsom admitted to helping his own mother commit suicide after she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Newsom’s priorities are all mixed up. While protecting animals from cruelty and abuse is important, the protection of human life is even more so. Newsom is openly defying his duty as a leader to protect his constituents. If he truly cares about the most vulnerable, he would work to protect babies in the womb, people with disabilities and the elderly from the threats of abortion, assisted suicide and euthanasia.
