Baptist Minister: Killing Babies in Abortion Should be a “Religious Right”

Killing an unborn child never has and never will be acceptable in Judaeo-Christian religions. But there are those who are trying to usurp and distort their religious teachings to claim abortion is not only acceptable but good.

“We’re trying to disrupt the idea that religion equals anti-choice,” the Rev. Katey Zeh, a Baptist minister and CEO of the Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, told Vice recently.

By “anti-choice,” Zeh means pro-life. And the specific “choice” that she advocates for and many religions oppose is the choice to kill a baby in the womb, but abortion activists don’t usually mention that important detail.

She claimed that the religious right “doesn’t speak for everybody,” and many religious people support abortion. Vice backed this up with polls showing strong support for abortion among Jewish Americans in particular.

While noting that pro-life Christians have been successful in promoting the cause of life, Vice argued that many other Jews, Christians and Muslims “believe their faith allows—and sometimes even requires—abortion under certain circumstances. They say the right to abortion is a constitutional one, protected not only by the right to privacy, but by the freedom to exercise religion.”

“There’s a lot of folks who are pro-choice or support reproductive dignity and freedom because of their faith and not in spite of it,” Zeh told the news outlet.

Vice even argued, “As Roe v. Wade is threatened by increasingly restrictive state bills and a Supreme Court stacked against [abortion], pro-choice Jews, Muslims, and Christians may soon be forced to come to the legal defense of abortion in a way its never been argued before: as a religious right.”

But religion is not based on public opinion or even its contemporary leaders’ teachings. It is based on basic, unchanging, fundamental beliefs about humanity and its value. For centuries, Christianity has taught that every human life is valuable because he/she is created in God’s image.

The Bible may not specifically mention the word “abortion,” but it clearly does condemn the life-destroying practice. Even in ancient times, babies in the womb were viewed as valuable, as is evident in Luke 1:41. Jesus placed great value on children when others in society did not in Matthew 19:14, and Proverbs 6:16-17 states that one of the things God hates most is the shedding of innocent blood. One of the ten commandments prohibits murder.

True religion does not trample on the rights of innocent human beings. Children’s lives are at stake in abortion, and children are upheld as valuable and worthy of protection in Judaeo-Christian teachings. Yet, in the name of religion, some pro-abortion leaders are perverting the truth and leading people astray and, in doing so, further jeopardizing the futures of countless children in society.
