An Ohio couple is in jail after they allegedly tried to abort their late-term unborn baby and then left him to die when he was born alive.

Authorities said Kalina Gillum, 21, of Heath, Ohio, was about 28 to 29 weeks pregnant when she took labor-inducing abortion drugs and gave birth to a live baby boy last September, WSYX News reports. Then, she and her partner, Braden Mull, 25, allegedly left the baby to die in their apartment, according to the report.

Mull and Gillum are charged with involuntary manslaughter, endangering children, abuse of a corpse and tampering with evidence, the report states.

Local authorities said they began investigating after the couple arrived at a hospital seeking help. They said they went to the couple’s apartment and found a dead newborn boy in a box inside a trash bag.

Allegedly, the couple bought the abortion drug misoprostol online from India, according to authorities. The drug also is used to induce labor. In the U.S., it typically is taken with a second drug, mifepristone, to abort unborn babies in the first trimester.

WCMH News reports more details:

According to Licking County Prosecuting Attorney William Hayes, on Sept. 18, 2019, Gillum took 12 misoprostol tablets she and Mull ordered from India with the intention to “induce labor and terminate Gillum’s pregnancy,” Hayes wrote in a press release.

Gillum was in her third trimester, about 28 or 29 weeks pregnant, at the time, Hayes said.

According to Hayes, on Sept. 19, Gillum gave birth to a male child in the bathroom of the apartment she shared with Mull.

“At no time did either one of them ever call 911 or seek emergency medical treatment for the child,” Hayes wrote.

Babies born at 28 weeks of pregnancy have a very good chance of surviving, thanks to modern medical advances. Viability is now considered to be about 22 weeks of pregnancy. If the allegations are true, the baby boy almost certainly would have survived if his parents had taken him to a hospital for treatment.

According to the local news, the couple also has a 3-year-old child.
