An Australian mom is being deluged with insults from mainstream news personalities and online commenters simply for choosing to serve her husband and children.
Brooke Smith, of Brisbane, recently posted a comment in an online moms group about her daily routine, which includes waking up at 4:30 a.m. to make her husband breakfast, Newshub reports.
“I always make sure I don’t go to bed until everyone’s lunches are packed, their clothes are set out for the next day including my husband’s and the house is clean,” the mother of four wrote.
“Sometimes it means I get to bed at nine sometimes that means I get to bed at midnight but I always get up early (4:30 with husband to make his breakfast and coffee),” Smith continued.
Even though her days can be long, Smith said it is worth it.
“Happy mum equals happy household,” she wrote. “Do it even when you feel like not doing it because you’ll be happy for it the next day.”
Her post drew a lot of attention. Though some praised the stay-at-home mom, others demeaned her with nasty comments about her and her husband.
Even mainstream news outlets joined in. On Wednesday, hosts of Australia’s The Today Show laughed at Smith for serving her family. One of the male hosts even insinuated that she is being brainwashed by her husband.
“Bah! Has he hypnotized her or something? Who does this stuff? Making his breakfast and then putting is clothes out over night? Is he disabled or something? Seriously? Get a grip,” the male host says.
“I like my husband, but make your own bloody breakfast and coffee,” a female host added, as the group laughed.

Responding to the backlash, Smith said she was not surprised. She said she and her husband have a great relationship, and he works hard, too.
“Our relationship is amazing, and I think our household dynamic has a big part in that,” she told the Daily Mail.
She told news.com.au that her husband works in construction, and they also run a family business.
“… I think that if someone works hard in the sun all day and now after hours to make their business work, I think it is the least I can do and he shouldn’t be expected to come home and cook and clean,” she said.
It is telling that women who do not fit the ideals of modern womanhood are seen as acceptable targets for bullying and insults. These women tend to be mothers who choose to stay at home to raise their children and run their households in partnership with their husbands who work outside the home. Mothers deserve to be encouraged and uplifted, whether they work inside or outside of the home, not publicly censured for their choices.
