The Senate voted today to acquit President Donald Trump and end what Republicans and pro-life groups called a partisan attack on his presidency. They charge that Democrats turned a non-issue into an attempt to remove him from office because they’re angry and upset by his extensive conservative policy initiatives, including protecting babies from abortion.
All Republicans voted to acquit except for Utah Senator Mitt Romney and all Democrats voted to impeach the president. On the first article the vote came in at 52-48 against impeachment and the second vote was 53-47 against impeachment.
During the debate, Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said, “The United States Senate was made for moments like this…this partisan impeachment will end today.”
And when commenting on how House Speaker Nancy Pelosi saying she won’t accept President Trump’s acquittal. “Perhaps she will tear up the verdict like she tore up the State of the Union address.”
President Trump’s re-election campaign responded to the impeachment vote with this statement about moving on towards the business of the country:
“President Trump has been totally vindicated and it’s now time to get back to the business of the American people. The do-nothing Democrats know they can’t beat him, so they had to impeach him. This terrible ordeal was always a campaign tactic to invalidate the 2016 votes of 63 million Americans and was a transparent effort to interfere with the 2020 election only nine months away. And since the President’s campaign only got bigger and stronger as a result of this nonsense, this impeachment hoax will go down as the worst miscalculation in American political history.”
Republican Whip Steve Scalise chimed in after impeachment, saying “Impeachment, as a constitutional tool to address wrongdoing, has been irreparably cheapened by Democrats’ antics and partisanship. Democrats were willing to tear our country apart just to remove President Trump from the Oval Office and the 2020 ballot. This failed impeachment will be Speaker Pelosi’s only legacy. President Trump, on the other hand, will continue to deliver results for American families, unburdened from Democrats’ ridiculous attempt to take him down.”
Tony Perkins, the head of the pro-life Family Research Council has said all along that impeachment is nothing more than a political witch hunt.
“President Trump is not the real target — you and I and the policy gains we’ve made are. Your values and mine keep advancing in Washington, D.C. as never before with President Trump’s pro-life, pro-family, pro-religious liberty agenda,” he said. “Liberals are enraged by President Trump’s tireless efforts to defund Planned Parenthood. The Trump administration’s “Protect Life Rule” stops Title X taxpayer dollars from going to family-planning facilities that perform or refer for abortions. Rather than comply with the rule, Planned Parenthood backed out of the family planning program altogether.”
“They are incensed by his defense of religious liberty, which he protected nationwide by issuing a historic presidential Executive Order Promoting Free Speech and Religious Liberty in 2017,” he said. “They are furious he has appointed dozens of originalist federal judges who will defend our constitutional freedoms for years — even decades — to come. In fact, President Trump has appointed one out of every FOUR federal appellate judges now serving our nation! And perhaps most of all, they are outraged at his steadfast support of life!”
The head of a leading pro-life group says impeachment speaks more to how much President Donald Trump is hated by Democrats and she told LifeNews that the president is disliked in part because he’s been so effective at governing pro-life.
“Democratic Party leaders’ extremism – displayed in their drive to oust President Trump, as well as their support for taxpayer-funded abortion on demand through birth and even infanticide – is a major political liability going into 2020,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser.

She told LifeNews: “President Trump is the most effective pro-life president in the history of our nation. From stopping taxpayer funding of the abortion industry at home and abroad, to protecting the conscience rights of pro-life Americans, to the confirmation of over 150 outstanding federal judges, he has beyond delivered on his promises to the voters who elected him. Calls for impeachment have been partisan from the beginning and motivated in part by opposition to the President’s pro-life policy victories.”
Gary Bauer, the head of American Values and a pro-life former presidential candidate, agrees.
“The radical left never accepted the results of the last election, and hate-filled progressives have been trying to impeach President Trump since the day he took office,” he said. “It seems liberal politicians don’t trust the voters to make the correct choice next November.”
On the House side, Democrats overwhelmingly approved impeaching President Donald Trump. But Nancy Pelosi and House Democrats continued to refuse a request to allow a vote on the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, legislation that would stop infanticide and provide medical care and treatment for babies who survive abortions.
Only a few Democrats refused to go along with impeachment. And only a handful of Democrats have requested a vote to stop infanticide.
President Trump’s record on pro-life values has been so strong a pro-life organization honored President Donald Trump on Sunday as a “courageous” advocate for life.
Trump has taken a number of important actions to protect unborn babies since he became president.
In one of his first acts as president, he reinstated and expanded the Mexico City Policy, which prohibits taxpayer funding to international groups that promote or provide abortions overseas. The change defunded Planned Parenthood’s international arm of about $100 million in U.S. tax dollars.

Trump also repeatedly calls out the Democratic Party’s extreme position on abortion. During his state of the union address this year, Trump slammed the governors of New York and Virginia for promoting abortion up to birth and infanticide. He also called for Congress to pass a ban on late-term abortions on babies who are capable of feeling pain.
Trump and his administration have made a number of changes to protect those who morally object to abortions, expanding conscience protections for pro-life medical workers and increasing religious exemptions for Obamacare.
His administration also intervened to stop the United Nations from supporting abortion in a resolution about sexual violence. In 2018, under his leadership, the State Department removed references to the so-called “right” to abort an unborn baby from a global human rights report as well.
This spring, the administration also finalized a new Title X rule that requires health care entities to completely separate abortion from their taxpayer-funded services. Planned Parenthood lost about $60 million in taxpayer funding through the policy change.
Trump also has appointed dozens of conservative judges to federal courts, including two to the U.S. Supreme Court.
