An Ohio woman will spend 30 days in jail as a result of charges involving the death of her 8-month unborn baby boy.

Lisa Marie Jordan, 31, of Warren, Ohio, told police that she attempted to self-induce an abortion in 2018, but it did not work, The Tribune Chronicle reports.

Later, in July of 2018, her baby’s stillborn body was found in a garbage bag in a garage, the report states. Police said they found the body after Jordan was admitted to the hospital for an illness and health professionals discovered that she had given birth several days earlier. She had been eight months pregnant at the time.

Police said Jordan told them that she had miscarried her son.

Later, an autopsy determined that the baby boy had traces of oxycodone and morphine in his body, according to the Cuyahoga County Coroner. The reports do not mention why the baby died, but the abortion attempt and/or the drugs possibly could have been factors.

In October, his mother pleaded guilty to gross abuse of a corpse and illegal possession of drugs, the local news reported at the time. Then, on Monday, Jordan was sentenced to 30 days in jail and five years of probation, the report states.

At eight months of pregnancy, an unborn baby is fully formed and viable. The likelihood of a baby surviving a premature birth at eight months is extremely high as long as basic medical care is provided. Thanks to modern medical technology, premature babies are surviving as early as 22 weeks of pregnancy.
