Police in eastern India are trying to find an illegal abortion practice this week after fishermen in found a blood-stained bag containing the bodies of about 24 aborted babies.
The Indian Express reports locals found the bag near a pond where they planned to fish Friday in Habra, India.
Police said they believe a local nursing home may be performing illegal abortions, and they are questioning local health care workers.
“The blood-stained sack was first spotted by locals when they gathered to catch fish from the pond at Mogra at 4:30 p.m. When they opened it, they found containers filled with fetuses,” according to the local police.
Authorities sent the bodies to Habra State General Hospital to be examined, according to the report.
“Nearly 24 foetuses have been found. The administration is looking into it,” said Habra Chief Health Officer Tapan Saha.

Police said illegal abortion practices are a growing problem in eastern India. Abortions are legal up to 20 weeks of pregnancy throughout the country, but illegal abortion practices still exist.
Such grisly discoveries are not limited to developing countries. In America, the disposal of aborted babies is a problem, too.
Earlier this fall, authorities discovered the remains of 2,411 aborted babies in a car and garage owned by the late Ulrich Klopfer, a former Indiana abortionist.
The discovery prompted U.S. Sen. Mike Braun to introduce federal legislation to ensure that nothing like it happens again. The Dignity for Aborted Children Act would require abortion facilities to bury or cremate the remains of aborted babies.
The U.S. Supreme Court upheld a similar law in Indiana earlier this year. Pennsylvania lawmakers also are considering a bill to require the proper disposal of aborted babies, either by burial or cremation.
