Pete Buttigieg Claims He’s a Christian, But He Supports Abortions Up to Birth

Indiana mayor Pete Buttigieg is rising in the polls, supposedly because of his more moderate political stance on a number of issues.

But the Democrat presidential candidate is not the moderate that some are making him out to be. On abortion, the South Bend mayor is just as extreme and out of touch with American voters as his political contenders.

A new CNN/Des Moines Register poll puts Buttigieg in the lead in Iowa, ahead of Elizabeth Warren, Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders.

But Micah Clark, executive director of the American Family Association of Indiana, told One News Now that Buttigieg is a “wolf in sheep’s clothing.” Clark noted how the Democrat often touts his Christian faith while hiding his far-left views on abortion and other issues.

“He’s not moderate any more than Elizabeth Warren is moderate,” Clark said.

As mayor of South Bend, Buttigieg tried to stop a pregnancy resource center from opening down the street from an abortion facility. Then, earlier this year, he celebrated when an abortion chain that amassed dozens of health and safety violations opened a new location there.

In May, when asked about abortions in the third trimester, Buttigieg said he thinks they should be legal and unrestricted.

“The bottom line is, as horrible as that choice is, that woman, that family, may seek spiritual guidance, they may seek medical guidance, but that decision isn’t going to be made any better, medically or morally, because the government is dictating how that decision should be made,” he said.

He also told Fox News’ Chris Wallace, “I trust women to draw the line.”

But without limits, unborn babies can be put to death for any reason, at any time in their mothers’ wombs in some states. They can be aborted simply because they have Down syndrome or a cleft lip, because they are a girl instead of a boy, or because their parents just don’t want a baby.

Then in September, he suggested that it is ok to end an unborn baby’s life until they draw their first breath.

He tried to align his radical abortion stance with Christianity in a recent interview with Rolling Stone:

Now, I actually think that if you look at an issue like [abortion] choice, there’s so many parts of the Bible that associate the beginning of life with breath that there’s plenty of scriptural basis to reach different conclusions about that. But only if you believe that the government must legislate these metaphysical questions does the debate about choice have to be about the government deciding where life begins.

I think the rest of us believe that, no matter what you think on where life begins, the question is who gets to decide how to handle this situation. And that’s how we accommodate a bunch of differently formed consciences at once. It’s the framework of Roe v. Wade, and that’s why there’s a strong American majority for choice, even while there’s very different opinions about deep questions around life.

But most Americans oppose third-trimester abortions. Polls consistently show that Americans want strong restrictions on abortion – stronger than what currently are in place.

A new poll from YouGov/Americans United for Life this week found that 70 percent of Americans support abortion limits. A 2019 Gallup poll also found 60 percent of Americans take a pro-life position on abortion wanting all (21 percent) or almost all (39 percent) abortions made illegal. And in May, a Hill/HarrisX poll found that 55 percent of voters said they do not think laws banning abortions after six weeks – when an unborn baby’s heartbeat is detectable – are too restrictive, according to The Hill.

Buttigieg’s abortion views do not align with Christianity any more than they do with voters. The Christian faith teaches that every human life is valuable, from conception to natural death, because human beings are created in the image of God. The Bible recognizes babies in the womb as valuable human beings, and it teaches that killing an innocent human being — especially a child — is evil.
