A California man pleaded guilty last week to murdering his pregnant girlfriend after she refused to abort her unborn baby.

The Blaze reports Antonio Magana, 23, of Santa Paula, allegedly murdered 21-year-old Ashley Moran and her unborn child in 2014 because he did not want to be a father.

Attorney William Haney, who represented Magana, said they reached a plea deal last week, which will include a sentence of 27 years to life in prison, according to the report.

“It is greatly hoped that his change of plea and acceptance of responsibility begins to afford the victim’s family some measure of peace and comfort,” Haney said.

It is not clear if Magana will face any punishment for the death of their unborn baby. According to a medical examiner’s report, the baby weighed about 5 grams and had a “distinguishable head, arms, legs, abdomen and major internal organs.”

The VC Star reports Magana allegedly hit his girlfriend in the back of the head with a baseball bat and stabbed her in the neck on the night of March 14, 2014, at Obregon Park in Santa Paula, California. Then, he allegedly hid her body. Someone found her body the next day and reported it to police, according to authorities.

An unnamed friend also reportedly went to the park with Magana and Moran but said they did not witness the alleged murder, according to the report. The friend did serve as a witness during the trial, but was accused of lying to prosecutors during the investigation, according to The Blaze.

Violence against pregnant women and their unborn babies is disturbingly common. LifeNews has reported numerous crime stories where men allegedly murdered or attempted to murder their pregnant partners after they refused to abort their unborn babies.

In 2017, a Hawaii jury convicted a man of murdering his pregnant ex-girlfriend after prosecutors said he stabbed her to death for refusing to abort their unborn child.

In 2018, a Utah man also faced murder charges after he allegedly killed his pregnant ex-girlfriend and her young son.

Others have used sneakier methods to get their way. In 2018, a Virginia doctor was convicted of spiking his pregnant girlfriend’s drink with an abortion drug, killing their unborn baby. Dr. Sikander Imran was sentenced to three years in prison after pleading guilty to fetal homicide.
