With morbid glee, abortion activists celebrated Tuesday when Northern Ireland was forced to legalize abortion on demand.
The once pro-life country has not had a functioning government for about three years. In July, the British government voted to force Northern Ireland to legalize abortion for any reason up to 28 weeks of pregnancy. The country’s political leaders had until midnight on Oct. 21 to re-form a government and reject the law. Pro-life lawmakers made several attempts to, but pro-abortion politicians blocked their efforts.
Abortion activists rejoiced at the stripping away of human rights for babies in the womb.
“I keep smiling at the realisation that in a few hours, women and girls will have the right to safe and legal abortion in Northern Ireland,” liberal journalist Sian Norris tweeted, the Independent reports.
The country’s students’ union, NUS-USI, also celebrated the news after lobbying for legalized abortion on demand, according to the University Times.
“Today is a truly historic day, one which is the result of years of grassroots activism which students have been at the heart of,” NUS–USI President Robert Murtagh said in a statement.
Pro-abortion politicians slammed their fellow lawmakers for trying to re-form the government so that Northern Ireland can make its own laws, rather than be forced to accept those imposed upon it by England.
Sinn Féin deputy leader Michelle O’Neill criticized pro-life leaders of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) for trying to protect human rights for the unborn, the report continues.

“I wish that the DUP and others put as much creativity into actually trying to make powersharing work as they have done today in an attempt to deny people their rights,” she said.
O’Neill supposedly meant the “right” to abortion, but her statement ignored the fact that unborn babies also are living, unique human beings who deserve rights.
Meanwhile, DUP leader Arlene Foster promised that her party “will do everything in our conscience to protect the lives of the unborn.”
The Catholic Bishops of Northern Ireland mourned Tuesday for the unborn babies who will die under the radical new pro-abortion law.
“At midnight last night, 21 October, all explicit protection for the unborn child up to 28 weeks of pregnancy was removed in Northern Ireland, leading to potentially one of the most liberal and unregulated abortion regimes in the world,” they said in a statement. “This is a tragic day for the unborn children who will now never bless our world with their unique and precious lives. It is also a sad day for our local democracy.”
They and other pro-life advocates promised not to give up the fight. Dawn McAvoy, co-founder of Both Lives Matter, said they will work to reverse the law once the government forms again.
“Both lives will always matter so this is not the end, only the end of the beginning and we will work through the consultation process and regulations to ensure both lives matter,” she said, according to Christian Today.
Northern Ireland was one of the last bastions of safety for unborn babies in Europe after abortion activists pushed Ireland to repeal its pro-life constitutional amendment in 2018.
Pro-life countries are under intense international pressure to legalize the killing of unborn babies. Many pro-abortion campaigns are backed by some of the richest men in the world.
