Abortion activists’ eyes are on the U.S. Senate in 2020.
Because of senators’ power over judicial confirmations and their influence on the future of abortion in America, Planned Parenthood and other pro-abortion groups are fighting aggressively and spending big to put the body back into pro-abortion Democrats’ hands.
On Thursday, the abortion chain endorsed 89 candidates for federal offices – just a day after announcing a “record-breaking” $45 million election budget, Newsweek reports.
The endorsements include pro-abortion Democrat incumbents Gary Peters of Michigan, Tina Smith of Minnesota and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, as well as challenger Mark Kelly, who is running against Arizona Sen. Martha McSally, a pro-life Republican, according to the report.
Planned Parenthood said its priority will be nine key swing states where it hopes to defeat pro-life Republicans. These include Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
The early endorsements and huge budget are signs of desperation from Planned Parenthood, the largest abortion provider in America.
“The stakes are higher than ever, and we’re coming out more powerful than ever with our largest investment ever made,” said Kelley Robinson, executive director of Planned Parenthood Votes, in a statement.

The moves come as advocates worry that internal strife could hobble Planned Parenthood’s political power heading into the 2020 cycle. The group’s board of directors this year fired its president and was mired in a public dispute over the circumstances of her departure; its health centers lost millions of dollars in federal family planning funding under a new Trump administration rule; and it is waging a court battle to keep open the last remaining abortion clinic in Missouri — a Planned Parenthood affiliate [with an extensive history of health and safety violations].
Currently, Republicans narrowly hold the U.S. Senate. Though two Republican senators are pro-abortion, the body has had enough votes to confirm important conservative judicial nominees from President Donald Trump, including U.S. Supreme Court Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh.
A few more pro-abortion Democrats in the Senate could block Trump from appointing conservative justices and thwart the chances of overturning Roe v. Wade. The Senate also could block life-saving legislation such as the Born Alive Infants Protection Act, if pro-abortion Democrats gain control.
Alexis McGill Johnson, acting president and CEO of Planned Parenthood, said their goal is to “flip the Senate and strengthen our House majority.” The abortion chain wants abortions to remain legal for basically any reason up to birth, and it wants taxpayers to pay for them.
The 2020 election, however, also poses a huge opportunity for the pro-life movement. Planned Parenthood certainly has a lot of money, but it does not have the grassroots support that it claims; and most Democratic candidates are touting an extreme pro-abortion agenda that is radically out of touch with most Americans.
As LifeNews reported in June, Gallup found 60% of Americans take a pro-life position on abortion wanting all (21%) or almost all 39% abortions made illegal. Polls consistently show strong opposition to taxpayer-funded abortions as well.
