Two doctors in Kazakhstan are facing murder charges after they allegedly allowed a newborn baby to freeze to death in a hospital morgue.

The baby boy was classified as “stillborn,” but hospital staff reportedly saw him move before he was placed in the morgue, the Daily Mail reports.

Authorities said they uncovered the horrific infanticide case while investigating Dr. Kuanysh Nysanbaev for bribery. Nysanbaev is a head physician at a regional perinatal hospital in Atyrau, Kazakhstan, according to the report.

Local Police Chief Shyngys Kabdula said they tapped Nysanbaev’s phone after he was accused of bribing officials to cover up medical mistakes. After listening to the phone records, Kabdula said they came to suspect the doctor of infanticide as well.

“After birth, the baby was negligently registered as stillborn, while in fact he was still alive,” Kabdula said.

The police chief said staff saw the baby’s leg move, and Nysanbaev knew it.

“After the child gave signs of life, the doctors, instead of taking urgent measures, decided to act according to paperwork already issued saying the child was stillborn,” Kabdula said.

He said they put the baby in a morgue refrigerator and left him to die.

“[Nysanbaev] talked about the baby on the phone,” the police chief said. “The baby died in the refrigerator.”

A second, unnamed obstetrician also is facing charges in the case, the report states. If convicted, they could face up to 20 years in prison.

Here’s more from the report:

It is claimed that Nysanbaev and the obstetrician decided that the hospital’s computer database already showed the baby was dead and they did not wish to correct it.

Nysanbaev is separately accused of using bribing officials to cover up medical mistakes and to obtain lavish foreign holidays.

Infanticide still occurs in countries across the world. Infants are abandoned and left to die by doctors, parents and others who are charged with their care.

Statistics indicate that dozens of babies are born alive after failed abortions every year in America, and pro-life advocates say some are left to die without even basic medical care. In other cases, babies are thrown in the trash. Some die there, while others are rescued by people who hear their cries.

In the United States, safe haven laws protect many newborn babies from infanticide. These laws allow mothers in crisis to leave their newborns in a safe environment, such as a hospital or fire station, without questions or repercussions, as long as there are no signs of abuse.
