Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is Trying to Kick a Pro-Life Democrat Out of Congress

Abortion activists have not given up their fight to kick out one of the last pro-life Democrats in Congress.

U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski of Illinois has been a target of abortion activists for years because he stands up to his party and defends unborn babies. In 2018, some of his party leaders turned against him and endorsed his primary opponent, pro-abortion candidate Marie Newman. Lipinski won anyway, but Newman and her supporters are trying again.

On Tuesday, Newman received an endorsement from U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a pro-abortion Democrat and socialist from New York, The Hill reports.

“It’s going to take a bigger, stronger Democratic Party — one that’s returned to our FDR roots & fights for working people — to change our future in 2020. We can’t afford deep blue seats fighting against healthcare & equal rights. We need [Newman],” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Twitter.

Lipinski responded by pointing to the endorsement as more evidence of Newman’s radical position.

Her support “makes crystal clear that Ms. Newman is an extreme candidate who is completely out of step with the voters of Illinois’ Third District …” according to CBS News.

And it’s true. Newman’s abortion policies are radical and out of touch with most Americans. According to the report, she supports Medicare for All, which, among other things, would force taxpayers to pay for elective abortions.

Polls consistently show strong opposition to taxpayer-funded abortions and late-term abortions, which Newman also supports.

In contrast, Lipinski has a strong record of protecting unborn babies. This spring, he was one of just a handful of Democrats to support the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. He also voted for the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which prohibits abortions after 20 weeks when unborn babies can feel pain.

Ocasio-Cortez tried to attack Lipinski as an “aggressive” establishment politician, writing on Twitter:

“Aggressive statements like these are so casually thrown from corporate candidates towards grassroots ones, yet they never get branded as ‘divisive,’ despite their rhetoric. We should ask ourselves why that is.”

But Newman is no grassroots candidate. She has the backing of the billion-dollar abortion lobby, including Planned Parenthood, NARAL, Emily’s List and MoveOn. Democratic presidential candidates Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren also endorsed Newman earlier this summer.

Meanwhile, Democratic Party leaders have been debating whether to stop supporting pro-life candidates like Lipinski altogether.

The Democratic Party has become increasingly radical and out of touch with voters on the abortion issue. The party platform now calls for full support of abortion for any reason up to birth as well as taxpayer funding of abortions, though both are widely unpopular positions among voters.

Democrats for Life estimates more than 23 million Democrats in the U.S. are pro-life. Pew Research found that 28 percent of Democrats say abortion should be illegal in most or all cases. Marist/KofC polling also found that 23 percent of Democrats consider themselves pro-life and 40 percent say abortion is morally wrong.

Many voters are leaving the Democratic Party because of its pro-abortion position. A Massachusetts mayor recently announced his decision to leave, disgusted by the party’s demand that unborn babies be sacrificed and their deaths celebrated.
