An Alabama Christian church made national headlines this week for suggesting that black voters who support President Donald Trump have a “mental illness.”
The sign outside the New Era Baptist Church in Birmingham reads, “A black vote for Trump is mental illness” on one side and “A white vote for Trump is pure racism” on the other, according to KHRT Radio.
Pastor Michael Jordan defended the sign, arguing that he is standing up for what is right.
“God motivates me to take a stand for what’s right,” he said, CNN reports. “Read the Bible. And look in the White House. If they’re calling me a racist, look in the White House. When you vote for Donald Trump, you are supporting institutionalized racism.”
“Will and Grace” actress Debra Messing also supported the racist sign on Twitter, Newsbusters reports. She later deleted the tweet.
Many black Americans who voted for Trump feel the opposite, that supporting him would help combat the deadly racism in the abortion industry.
Abortion is the number one killer of black lives in America. African American women in New York City have more abortions than lives births. It is estimated that about 20 million African-American babies were not born in the United States because they were aborted.
Black Americans have a disproportionately high number of abortions compared to other racial groups. According to census data, African Americans make up about 13 percent of the U.S. population but have about 30 percent of the abortions.

Alveda King, the director of the Civil Rights for the Unborn outreach through Priests for Life and the niece of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., has been a strong leader in the civil rights and pro-life movements. She also is a big supporter of Trump.
“When President Trump promised to protect innocent human life, he meant it,” King wrote at LifeNews.com in August. “Thanks to his administration’s reforms, Planned Parenthood is giving up $60 million in federal funding, or enough to cover the costs of about 40,000 abortion procedures.”
Research by Protecting Black Life suggests that Planned Parenthood targets black women and their unborn babies. It found that 79 percent of Planned Parenthood surgical abortion facilities are located within walking distance of black and Latino neighborhoods.
Its founder, Margaret Sanger, also was a well-known eugenicist who wrote and spoke frequently about how certain groups of human beings are less valuable than others.
In one particularly dehumanizing piece, Sanger wrote in 1925: “… Their lives are hopeless repetitions. All that they have said has been said before; all that they have done has been done better before. Such human weeds clog up the path, drain up the energies and the resources of this little earth. We must clear the way for a better world; we must cultivate our garden.”
Black voters like King and others believe abortion is a key issue when casting their vote. When so many babies’ and mothers’ lives are at stake, they want a candidate who promises to fight to protect them.
