Planned Parenthood is not hurting for cash. With a record $1.66 billion in reported revenue last year, shrinking patient numbers and fewer actual health services, the abortion “nonprofit” does not need Americans’ tax dollars.
But the liberal, elite entertainment industry is coming to its completely unnecessary rescue after President Donald Trump’s new “Protect Life” rule defunded it of about $60 million.
This week, the entertainment magazine Variety boasted about its plan to help Planned Parenthood. Instead of hosting their annual Emmy Awards nominees party, Variety editors said they plan to donate to Planned Parenthood.
“Variety continues to advocate for women’s rights, including issues of healthcare and gender disparity in the entertainment industry, and we stand with Planned Parenthood and our longstanding partnership with Women In Film,” said Variety editor-in-chief Claudia Eller and group publisher and chief revenue officer Michelle Sobrino-Stearns.
The Variety editors said they decided to cancel the party and donate to Planned Parenthood as a result of the Trump administration’s new Title X rule.
Caren Spruch, director of arts and entertainment engagement for Planned Parenthood, praised the magazine, saying, “We are so grateful to Variety for its unwavering support of Planned Parenthood and commitment to sexual and reproductive health and rights.”

Earlier this week, CEO Alexis McGill Johnson slammed Trump as an “unethical bully” for creating the rule.
But Trump’s new rule did not force Planned Parenthood out of the program, rather the abortion group refused to comply. It received about $60 million through the Title X program, which helps low-income individuals access birth control, cancer screenings and other health care services.
The new Title X rule helps to ensure that the taxpayer-funded program does not indirectly subsidize abortions. To qualify for Title X grants, the rule requires facilities to either stop promoting and providing abortions or to completely separate their abortion businesses from their actual health services.
Planned Parenthood refused to do either, and filed a lawsuit challenging the rule. However, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals recently allowed the Trump administration to enforce it until the legal challenges are resolved.
Planned Parenthood chose not to comply. It chose to put abortions ahead of birth control, cancer screenings and other actual health services when it refused to participate in Title X.
Its decision reinforces what pro-life advocates have been saying for years, citing evidence from Planned Parenthood’s own annual reports. These reports show that its patient numbers are down, and it is providing less birth control, cancer screenings, prenatal care, well-women exams and other health services. Meanwhile, its abortion numbers and revenues are up.
It is clear that abortions are Planned Parenthood’s core mission.
Variety is not helping low-income individuals by supporting Planned Parenthood. Its donations will help prop up the already profitable abortion industry and nothing more.
