Tomorrow is Day One of the second round of presidential debates featuring 20 pro-abortion Democrats competing for the opportunity to take on pro-life President Donald Trump in 2020. Although Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders will headline the first panel, much of the media attention will be on Wednesday, Day Two, when former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Kamala Harris will be joined by eight others with very little appeal, at least to date, among Democrat primary voters.
What gives the Biden/Harris faceoff such appeal is that Harris eviscerated a dumbfounded Biden in the first go-round. Biden has vowed to dig into Harris’ record as she did his in Miami.
We’ll see. I, for one, am skeptical.
But the squabbles among a gaggle of pro-abortion Democrats looking for the slightest edge is second in importance to how they are creating an indelible impression of support for policies that are overwhelmingly rejected by the electorate. From our single-issue perspective, that kind of clarity on abortion—and infanticide—is of the highest importance.
Of course, as is their wont, their friends in the Mainstream Media will paint a picture of Democrats who are “moderate” on abortion as contrasted with the “extremist” President Trump. But even in the highly unusual likelihood that the CNN moderators–Dana Bash, Don Lemon, and Jake Tapper—choose to avoid asking about abortion, it will come up for the reason mentioned above: all the Democrats want the pro-abortion political machine saying favorable things about them.
Last month, Mr. Biden did himself no favors. On June 26, he literally ran out of things to say and uttered the memorable, “I guess my time’s up” line. I immediately thought of the famous Roger Mudd interview with the late Ted Kennedy when Mudd asked Sen. Kennedy, “Why do you want to be president?”
His answer was, to be charitable, incoherent. It was painful to watch; I cringe to this day even thinking about it. It was as if it never dawned on Sen. Kennedy that someone would ask him why he would want to hold the most powerful office in the world.

Ditto for Mr. Biden. He was and is the frontrunner. Did he expect a free pass from his competitors?
But Biden’s rambling non-answers elevated the age issue, the proverbial elephant in the room. Is he up to running for President a third time, especially in light of his famous penchant for making bewildering comments? If he bungles his answers again this week, the dye will be cast.
Moreover, already, wiser heads are cautioning Democrats that “they shouldn’t ignore moderates and indulge the left,” as Bill Sternberg of USA Today wrote this morning. “If the party keeps lurching to the left, rehashing old battles and alienating working-class voters, President Donald Trump will be putting his hand on the Bible again in January 2021.”
Easier said than done.
On abortion, there is zero chance Democrats will take a step back from the electoral precipice. They know they must shallow the abortion on demand position hook, line, and sinker if they are going to compete in their party.
They believe they can hide their extremism in the general election.
They are correct on the first. They could not be more wrong on the second.
President Trump will not only articulate his own pro-life position forcefully, he will also not allow Democrats to wiggle out of their embrace of abortion without limit.
