Chicago police charged three teenage girls on Thursday in a brutal attack on a 15-year-old girl with disabilities.

The incident, which was captured on film and posted online, shows a group of teenagers mobbing and beating the girl on the street while others stood around and laughed, the Daily Caller reports. In the video, the girl can be heard screaming in pain as the teens punch her, hit her and push her to the ground. It is not clear how severely she was injured.

Chicago Police Lt. Ozzie Valdez said two teenage girls have been charged with aggravated battery and a third faces mob action charges in the incident. Police did not name any of the girls because they all are minors, according to the report.

“In their interviews, the detectives learned that the victim met several juveniles, who she thought were her friends,” Valdez said. “These girls then taught her how to flash gang signs, and as this was occurring, a beating began, which was captured on video.”

Police said the attack happened Monday, four days after the 15-year-old girl’s father reported her missing. The girl believed that the alleged attackers were her friends, according to police.

Valdez said their investigation is not over, and more people in the video could face charges.

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson condemned the discrimination behind the attack in a statement.

“I’ve got to tell you, it broke my heart to see this group of young people turn on her and escalated into what we saw — a physical assault,” he said. “Hate, bullying and bigotry are cancers of our society that do nothing but break and divide us.”

There is so much violence against the most vulnerable people in society today, including the sick and elderly, people with disabilities and babies in the womb. People are being dehumanized, treated as less valuable, simply because they have different physical qualities. They are being neglected, abused, beaten and killed simply because of who they are, because they may be easy targets.

Those with the ability and strength to defend have an obligation to fight for them. So many lives are at stake.
