Exactly how many children a Dutch fertility doctor allegedly fathered by using his sperm without his patients’ knowledge may never be known.

But the current count is 49, and more people are coming forward, The AP reports.

Dr. Jan Karbaat, who died two years ago, is accused of using his own sperm to inseminate dozens of his patients with infertility problems, rather than using the sperm of donors whom the patients chose, according to Fox News.

DNA tests recently confirmed that Karbaat fathered 49 children in this way, but Ties van der Meer of the Dutch Donor Child Foundation told reporters that three more possible children recently came forward after hearing about the case in the news.

The clinic where Karbaat worked in Bijdorp closed in 2009. In 2017, several former patients and possible children sued Karbaat based on suspicions about what he did, according to Fox News. He died that same year.

Many of his children are in their 30s.
