Democrats Complained About Cutting Special Olympics Funding, But Support Aborting Its Participants

Pro-abortion Democrats were accused of playing politics with children’s lives this week in a debate over proposed budget cuts to the Special Olympics program.

The much-beloved program organizes sporting competitions for individuals with disabilities across the world. Through its 50 years of advocacy, the Special Olympics has been a leader in raising awareness about the value and potential of every human life.

So, it was no surprise that both Republicans and Democrats complained about the Trump administration’s proposed $17.6 million cut in the organization’s funding. The AP reports President Donald Trump responded to the outrage Thursday by restoring the funding.

But his administration did not waste the opportunity to call out pro-abortion Democrats’ duplicity on the matter of individuals with special needs.

“I’m sure Democrats who see abortion as the cure for Down syndrome and other disabilities are sincerely concerned about kids having the chance to be in the Special Olympics,” Matt Wolking, deputy communications director for the Trump campaign, wrote on Twitter.

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos called it “disgusting” and “shameful” that Democrats were using the children with disabilities for their own political gain, according to Inforum.

“Let’s not use disabled children in a twisted way for your political narrative,” she said in response to pro-abortion U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin’s questioning on the budget cuts. “That is just disgusting, and it’s shameful.”

Durbin objected, saying he was not “twisting” the issue, and called the cuts “shameful.”

But it is Durbin’s hypocrisy on the matter of human value that truly is shameful. He and almost all of his fellow Senate Democrats have no problem with aborting unborn babies with special needs — even viable, late-term babies who could survive outside the womb. They recently blocked a bill that would have required basic medical care for infants who survive abortions as well.

Pro-abortion Democrats also support funding the largest abortion chain in America, Planned Parenthood, to the tune of nearly half a billion dollars a year. This is a group that advocates for the killing of unborn babies for any reason without restriction.

In recent years, many Democratic leaders have embraced the abortion industry’s sickening position on eugenic abortions – a position that allows for the elimination of the same people who may compete in the Special Olympics someday.

The rate of unborn babies who are aborted after a Down syndrome diagnosis is shocking: about 67 percent in the U.S. and nearly 100 percent in Iceland, according to CBS News. Parents frequently report feeling pressured to abort babies with special needs by doctors and genetic counselors.

But Democratic allies such as the American Civil Liberties Union and Planned Parenthood are fight pro-life lawmakers’ attempts to end this discrimination. They have lawsuits pending in multiple states against non-discrimination laws that protect unborn babies with disabilities.

If Democrats sincerely care about people with special needs, they need to reverse course on abortion, and embrace the fact that every child with special needs, no matter how old they are or what their abilities are, is a person worth protecting.
