Pro-Abortion Blog Claims Killing Babies in Abortions “Improves Children’s Lives”

“Scary Mommy” is an apt name for a blog that claims aborting unborn babies “improves children’s lives.”

Blogger Sarah Aswell made that claim based on a study by pro-abortion researchers that came out late last year. The study, published in the Journal of Pediatrics, argued that children are better off when their mothers are able to abort their siblings.

“What researchers found was that everyone is harmed when women are denied a wanted abortion: the woman herself, her existing kids, and her future children are all at a disadvantage,” Aswell wrote. “At the same time, women who were able to secure an abortion when they had made that choice saw improved lives for themselves, their existing kids, and their future kids.”

But Aswell neglected to mention that they did so at the expense of one of their other children – their baby in the womb. That baby – a unique, living human being whose heart likely was already beating – died a violent death because of their mother’s choice.

Aswell interviewed lead researcher Diana Greene Foster, a well-known abortion activist, who reiterated the talking point by ignoring how an abortion kills an unborn baby.

“Women who have unwanted pregnancies are juggling a lot of responsibilities. Some make the decision to abort a pregnancy because they want to be able to take care of the children they already have,” Foster told Scary Mommy. “This study shows that if women can’t get a wanted abortion, it negatively affects their existing children. And it may also limit their ability to have a wanted child later.”

Foster claimed it is not enough to legalize abortion, it must be expanded and supported so that every woman can easily abort her unborn baby.

According to the report:

“Already in the US, many women are not able to get an abortion,” she said. “We estimate that over 4000 women are unable to get wanted abortions just due to gestational limits. Many others don’t get an abortion because they can’t afford one or can’t get to a clinic. So even with abortion being legal, it isn’t always accessible.”

If denying access to abortion hurts women and kids, where does that leave pro-lifers?

“If someone is pro-life, meaning that they want women and children to have the best life possible, they should be interested in women having control over the timing of their births,” said Dr. Foster. “When women are able to decide whether and when to bring a child into the world, they are better able to take care of the children they already have and to plan to have children at a time that they can provide all the emotional and material resources a child needs.”

There is a strong body of research that contradicts Foster’s findings. Abortions destroy children’s lives and often negatively affect the aborted child’s siblings.

Child psychiatrist and psychologist Dr. Philip Ney has done extensive research on the effects of abortion on siblings. He found that many siblings of aborted children experience survivor’s guilt and struggle with their sense of self-worth. Siblings of abortion victims also can suffer from depression, anxiety, low self esteem, fear of the future and other psychological problems, according to Ney’s research.

“The most prominent symptom of PASS [post-abortion survivor syndrome] is existential guilt, ‘I feel I don’t deserve to be alive,’” Ney wrote in 2011.

A few years ago, the child of an abortion activist shared how deeply the news that she had aborted siblings affected her.

“Suddenly, I realized my mother carried me to term not because I was a mythical child loved from the outset, but because I happened to be in the right place at the right time. I wasn’t any more special than my siblings—just lucky enough to have been a planned and wanted pregnancy,” the writer said.

But even if abortions did not negatively affect mothers or born children, they still are wrong because they kill innocent living human beings. Like every other human being, unborn babies deserve the chance to live, to grow and to overcome the adversities of life.
