Aaron Trejo, a 16-year-old Indiana high school football player, was formally charged today with murder and feticide in the deaths of Breana Rouhselang, who was 17 years old, and her unborn baby. Rouhselang was six months pregnant.

Trejo is being held without bond and is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday, WNDU reported.

Authorities “believe Trejo and Rouhselang knew each other through the football team,” People magazine reported. “Rouhselang was a cheerleader at Mishawaka High School, where Trejo played football, authorities say. Her family told local media that in addition to cheerleading, Rouhselang had been a softball coach and a manager of the football team, Fox59 reports.”

Miss Rouhselang’s body “was discovered in a dumpster behind Pasquale Rulli’s Restaurant about a block away from the house she shared with her mother,” according to CBS News.

Lt. Alex Arendt of the St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit told the Associated Press that relatives of the slain teenager had last seen her around midnight on Saturday and had called police around 4:30 a.m. Sunday after they “got the feeling that something wasn’t right.”

In its story today WNDU quoted extensively from Detective Gery Mullins’ account in the charging documents. Mullins said he asked Trejo

if the fight was about the pregnancy. Aaron Trejo quietly said, “Yes.” Aaron then explained that Breana waited too long to tell Aaron about the pregnancy to get an abortion. I asked Aaron what he did about that, and he replied, “I took action…I took her life.”

The rest of the details are too gruesome to extensively detail. Suffice it to say Trejo had carefully planned the murder for a week. According to the charging document

An autopsy confirmed that Breana Rouhselang died from multiple stab wounds, that her scarf had been tied so tightly that strangulation was occurring before Breana died, and that she was pregnant. The manner of Breana Rouhselang’s death is homicide.

Rouhselang’s stepmother, Nicole, has established a Gofundme page to pay for the funeral and related expenses. She wrote,

“This is such a hard tragedy to accept! This loving young lady was so full of life and didn’t deserve this. … Please keep this family in your thoughts and prayers. No one can ever be prepared for a loss like this.”

When police arrived at the 400 block of Battell Street they found what they described as evidence of a violent crime “before ultimately discovering Rouhselang’s body in the dumpster.

“Shortly after finding her body, police interviewed Trejo and took him into custody on the preliminary murder charge,” Alex Lasker reported.
