Planned Parenthood is Wrong: Abortion is Not Health Care

Planned Parenthood is trying to equate health care with the killing of unborn babies, National Review’s Alexandra DeSanctis wrote in a powerful piece this week.

The billion-dollar “non-profit” has been selling itself as an essential women’s health care provider for years, but its new CEO barely mentions the word abortion, DeSanctis pointed out. Instead, “health care” is her phrase of choice, and Planned Parenthood repeats it ad nauseam. This is even though Planned Parenthood is primarily an abortion provider, and the largest one in the country.

“Refashioning the meaning of words to fit political purposes is in vogue,” she wrote. “… Leana Wen — the new president of Planned Parenthood, with her singularly unconvincing veneer of naiveté — has taken the helm and launched the institution’s ‘new vision,’ summed up by the slogan ‘This Is Health Care.’”

The phrase is plastered all over Planned Parenthood’s social media accounts and in Wen’s interviews. Prominent pro-abortion Democrats also have latched onto the talking point.

Wen told Elle Magazine in a recent interview: “Limiting access to health care is a tool of oppression—a tool the administration knows well. Public charge is just one of many policies they have enacted to take care and power away from immigrants.”

Wen said “health care” because it is a much more friendly phrase than abortion – the violent destruction of living unborn children in their mother’s wombs.

“No one, after all, wishes to be a loud public champion for the right to end the life of an unborn human being,” DeSanctis explained.

It’s true – with a few limited exceptions. Even Democrat leader Nancy Pelosi recently admitted that Democrats lose when the talk about abortion, according to the New York Times. Ahead of the November mid-terms, Pelosi urged pro-abortion candidates to talk about “health care” instead – though abortion absolutely is included under that umbrella term in their minds.

DeSanctis responded:

Setting a broken bone is health care. Prescribing allergy medication is health care. Open-heart surgery is health care. Lethally injecting a living, entirely unique human being and suctioning it from its mother’s womb piece by piece is not health care. To say otherwise is total delusion or utmost evil.

There’s a reason why defenders of abortion rights refuse to define their terms. If they call abortion what it is, they will lose. Many people will speak up for women’s autonomy. Many more will defend the right to access health care. No one wants to justify killing unborn human beings.

Not even Planned Parenthood will do that.

Planned Parenthood’s strategy is a cleverly manipulative one and it may be effective on some level, but it suggests that Americans still are troubled by abortion. If they were not, Planned Parenthood and Democrat leaders would not be hiding it behind words like “choice” and “health care.”

It speaks to the power of truth and the pro-life movement. Abortion activists have made a number of concerted efforts to normalize the killing of unborn babies through campaigns like “Shout your abortion.” But Americans are not buying it. And that, at least, brings a glimmer of hope through the lies and manipulation of the abortion industry.
