Women wearing red robes and big white bonnets have become a common site at pro-abortion political events.

A symbol of oppression from “The Handmaid’s Tale,” the costumes have become almost synonymous with abortion activism. Costume designer Ann Crabtree, who created the creepy outfits for the Hulu series, said she feels humbled that her design is now being used by abortion activists across the world.

“It really moves me so much and it means so much to me … but I feel like how would I know yet?” Crabtree told Business Insider. “It’s only been two years. … What’s interesting is that it’s global now. It’s being used in so many countries for so many different reasons and protests. All I can say is that it’s very humbling.”

Abortion activists latched onto the the novel-turned TV series, which takes place in a future totalitarian regime where the fertile women left on the planet are forced to become slaves and bear children for the upper class. Pro-abortion advocates claim the fictional world has similarities to the current politics in America.

Even author Margaret Atwood called pro-life laws a “form of slavery.” Abortion activists from America to Argentina to Ireland have used her novel and the red and white costumes to protest rights for unborn babies.

Crabtree said she still is stunned by how popular the “Handmaid” series has become.

“The meaning of it will probably hit me 20 years from now for real, but it’s so beautiful, the feeling,” she said.

Atwood recently announced plans to publish a sequel, to be released in 2019. Atwood, who supports abortion on demand, said her new work was inspired by “the world we’ve been living in” today.

But abortion is the real oppression. Abortion destroys babies’ lives, and those who advocate for it claim women cannot succeed unless they can kill their own children. That is not freedom. That is oppression of the most vulnerable people in our world today.
