House Republicans will become the minority in the House of Representatives in January. Today they elected their leaders for the next Congress and they picked pro-life Rep. Kevin McCarthy to stay on as their party leader. He defeated pro-life Congressman Jim Jordan by a vote of 159-43.
McCarthy, R-Calif., will replace retiring Speaker Paul Ryan as the top House Republican but will lead a minority in a House where pro-abortion Nancy Pelosi is expected to become Speaker. he defeated House conservative Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, who is the founder of the House Freedom Caucus.
House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.), who is pro-life, was today selected to serve as the Republican Whip for the 116th Congress. After running unopposed for this position, he was unanimously voted in by his Republican colleagues.
“I am honored that my colleagues have chosen me to be their Republican Whip for the 116th Congress. While the midterm election results were not what we hoped for, we must now sharpen our focus on reestablishing the conservative principles that are proven to help hard-working families have better opportunities to achieve the American Dream.
“As Majority Whip, I worked hard to bring our Conference together and build coalitions that advanced our pro-growth agenda, and I will bring that same fighting spirit and determination to this new role. Starting today, we must stand united every day as House Republicans to build a more safe and secure America, as we work to block a radical, leftist agenda that would reverse the gains we’ve made for hard-working families across America.
“I look forward to keep leading that charge along with President Trump and the rest of our House Leadership team.”
The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) praised McCarthy in a statement to LifeNews.

“Congressman Kevin McCarthy is a great friend to the pro-life movement and we congratulate him on his election to serve as House Minority Leader,” said SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser. “Congressman McCarthy is one of the foremost champions of ‘Micah’s Law,’ compassionate, popular legislation to stop painful late-term abortions after five months of pregnancy, which passed with overwhelming support in the House last year under his leadership. Having a strong pro-life ally like McCarthy in this key position will be important to safeguarding pro-life policies that will come under attack by pro-abortion House Democrats who seek abortion on demand, funded by the taxpayers. We congratulate Leader McCarthy and look forward to continuing to work together to advance the pro-life cause in the U.S. House.”
Dannenfelser was also pleased that Representative Liz Cheney (R-WY) was elected to serve as chair of the U.S. House of Representatives Republican Conference. Cheney is strongly pro-life.
“We are proud to see Congresswoman Liz Cheney, a member of our National Pro-Life Women’s Caucus, elected chair of the House Republican Conference. This makes her the highest-ranking Republican woman in Congress,” said Dannenfelser. “Liz is a strong, compassionate pro-life champion, speaking out boldly on the House floor in favor of legislation to stop late-term abortions after five months of pregnancy and protect babies born alive during failed abortions. We congratulate Congresswoman Cheney and look forward to continuing to work together to safeguard the most vulnerable.”
Rep. Cheney is a co-sponsor of the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act and the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, for which she led debate on the House floor, the Life at Conception Act, and the No Taxpayer Funding of Abortion and Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act.
