Amendment 1 in West Virginia to Stop Tax-Funded Abortions Could Save 1,500 Babies a Year

The national pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) today announced the details of a $500,000 campaign to educate West Virginia voters on Amendment 1. The pro-life ballot initiative could save the lives of more than 1,500 unborn West Virginians a year by stopping taxpayer-funded abortions.

Currently, elective abortions up to five months of pregnancy are paid for by taxpayers under Medicaid. In January Metro News reported that the number of abortions funded by taxpayers had more than tripled in the last five years.

The campaign includes television, radio, and digital advertising as well as voter mail. Since July, SBA List’s team of more than 75 pro-life canvassers has visited more than 50,000 voters urging them to vote Yes on 1 and to defeat Senator Joe Manchin, who has dodged questions on Amendment 1 and has voted to send taxpayer dollars to abortion giant Planned Parenthood.

SBA List’s Mallory Quigley and West Virginia Delegate Kayla Kessinger will also hold press conferences across the Mountain State Monday and Tuesday in Beckley, Charleston, Bridgeport, and Wheeling.

“West Virginia is a pro-life state and a majority of voters are rightfully horrified when they find out that the state has used their tax dollars to pay for abortions – even late-term abortions – for more than two decades. More than 35,000 children have had their lives brutally ended by abortion – and taxpayers have foot the bill to the tune of nearly ten million dollars,” said SBA List spokeswoman Mallory Quigley.

“On Election Day, voters have a chance to turn the tide by passing Amendment 1 and by electing pro-life champions – not Joe Manchin. Manchin won’t say for sure where he stands and even questioned why reporters, or voters, would want to know his stance. Voters have right to know before they cast their ballot in November if Sen. Manchin really stands with them or if he is just another pro-abortion radical who will side with Chuck Schumer, who wants to keep taxpayers complicit in abortion on demand up to the moment of birth.”

Last month SBA List and the Pro-life Court Coalition held a series of press conferences across the state of West Virginia urging Sen. Manchin to respect the will of West Virginians by supporting the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. The group also previously aired two television ads on broadcast and cable as well as two radio ads exposing Sen. Manchin for supporting taxpayer funding for Planned Parenthood, America’s largest abortion business.
