A sickening new revelation, the autopsy of a Mississippi toddler found she was still alive when her grandmother allegedly placed her in a heated oven, authorities said this week.

The girl’s grandmother, Carolyn Jones, 48, of Shaw, is facing first-degree murder charges in the death of 20-month-old Royalty Marie Floyd.

The Daily Mail reports information about the toddler’s autopsy was released this week, indicating she died “from sharp stab wounds and inhaling the heated air in the oven.”

Sometime around Oct. 15, Jones allegedly stabbed the toddler and then placed her in the heated oven, killing the child, according to authorities. The young girl’s body was discovered by Jones’ brother, who called the police, according to the report.

WMC 5 News reports the medical examiner said the toddler was alive when she was placed in the heated oven.

The grandmother remains in jail on $500,000 bail, the report states.

Bolivar County Sheriff Kelvin Williams Sr. said this is one of the worst crime cases he has ever witnessed, the Clarion Ledger reports.

“I’ve been doing law enforcement for 25 or 26 years now,” Williams said. “This is one of the most horrible things I’ve seen in doing law enforcement. The hardest part … is to see a child victim.”

He said they know that Jones was the only one home with the baby when the murder took place, but they do not know the motive.

The baby’s mother, Veronica Jones, did not live with her daughter, according to reports. The reasons why are unclear.

Community members held a vigil Monday for Royalty, according to the local news.
