UN Ambassador Nikki Haley Was Unwaveringly Pro-Life, Took on Abortion at the United Nations

I have felt the privilege, the honor and the heartbreak of being a representative for the cause of life on behalf of National Right to Life at the United Nations since 1993.

In that quarter-century, I suffered through the Clinton years when pro-abortion zealots the likes of Bella Abzug were leading the American delegation, and pro-abortion UN Ambassadors Madeleine Albright and New Mexico’s own Bill Richardson were calling the shots. Those were incredibly difficult years when pro-abortion profiteers like International Planned Parenthood had carte blanche on influencing international abortion policy. They were not only welcomed at the UN but also elevated to more significant positions of power by the Clinton administration.

There was a pause in the abortion carnage during the Bush administration, and we were able to stop the advancing pro-abortion troops. Under the Bush administration, we saw the UN General Assembly adopt the historic United Nations Declaration on Human Cloning which calls on member states to ban all forms of human cloning. We marveled at the inclusion of language in the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities which reaffirmed that every human being has the inherent right to life.

We somehow survived the dark days of the Obama administration when we, as pro-life Americans, were made to feel like foreigners in our own country when working in Manhattan. We were blocked at every turn, our efforts were utterly dismissed and ultimately defeated. We helplessly watched as Obama installed the first ever “Abortion Ambassador,” Melanie Verveer, whose only job was to go around the world promoting abortion and so-called “reproductive rights.”

Then a wondrous thing happened.

Donald J. Trump won the 2016 election and appointed South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley as Ambassador to the United Nations. Those of us who knew of Mrs. Haley’s pro-life efforts in South Carolina were thrilled. We knew her to be a stalwart for life and the truth. As Ambassador, she did not let us down.

National Right to Life is the longest standing, single-issue pro-life organization at the United Nations, and we shall miss Ambassador Haley.

During her tenure, we witnessed more pro-life victories than ever thought possible.

At the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, the American delegation, for the first time referenced, “voluntary and informed family planning” and kept out the additional controversial pro-abortion language.

At the United Nations Commission on Population and Development, the American delegation held strong to reject a document that ignored the sovereignty of UN member states.

During negotiations of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Humanitarian Resolution, the American delegation worked closely with other member states to keep out the radical pro-abortion language.

Ambassador Haley repeatedly gave her delegation free reign to negotiate the life issue in the strongest of terms. Unwavering, and pro-life. Those who worked for her who came out of the pro-life movement describe her as, “awesome,” “amazing,” and “brilliant.”

I will miss her, we will miss her, and can only hope and pray that her replacement will have the heart for the unborn children just as she did. Godspeed Ambassador Haley, and thank you, ma’am, ever so much.
