A hot pot restaurant in eastern China recently closed for an investigation by health officials after a pregnant woman said she found a dead rat in her soup, and claimed the restaurant staff offered her money for an abortion.

Last Thursday night a woman and her husband went to Xiabu Xiabu, a popular Beijing-based fast food hot pot chain with locations around China. A few bites into the meal, the woman said she found a dead rat floating in her soup, according to Fox News.

After expressing their concern to the staff, the couple said that the restaurant offered them money, especially since the wife is pregnant.

“If you are worried about the baby, then we’ll give you 20,000 yuan ($3,000) to abort it,” the husband said the restaurant staff told him.

It wasn’t reported how much, if any, money the couple accepted.

In a statement on Saturday night, Xiabu Xiabu said it had always placed great emphasis on food security and would make any necessary improvements, according to the South China Morning Post.

This couple’s experience with the dead rat is not the first questionable health incident to occur in recent weeks, but it certainly is the only event in which abortions allegedly were offered to the restaurant patrons.

The local market supervision authority in China has announced that it is looking into the matter.

If true, it was a doubly tragic situation where a terrible act that would have killed an unborn baby was offered as a remedy for a horrible mistake.
