A Pennsylvania-based program that provides compassionate support to pregnant and parenting moms received praise from Vice President Mike Pence recently.

Real Alternatives celebrated a landmark this summer – 300,000 clients served. The organization oversees a network of pregnancy centers, maternity homes and other agencies that receive public funds to help women who choose life for their babies. It works in Pennsylvania, Indiana and Michigan.

“For more than two decades, Real Alternatives has empowered women for life by providing positive, life-affirming pregnancy and parenting support services to women and families in need,” Pence said in a June letter that Real Alternatives shared with LifeNews.

The organization has been serving women and babies since March 1996. Their services are free, and many continue beyond pregnancy and into the baby’s first year or two of life. They include everything from clothing, food and furniture to temporary shelter, counseling and parenting classes.

Pence promised the Trump administration would continue to work to uphold the dignity of the unborn.

“With your caring and compassionate work, I have great confidence that, together, we can continue to restore a culture of life in our nation and build a bright future for generations to come,” he wrote.

Several years ago, when Pence was governor of Indiana, he also praised the program for helping mothers and babies in his state. The Indiana program alone served about 30,000 clients between 2014 and 2017, according to the program.

“Real Alternatives provides positive, life-affirming services for Hoosier women and families,” Pence said at the time. “It is important to not only ensure that pregnant women receive proper prenatal care, but also the emotional and physical support they need for a healthy pregnancy. Real Alternatives helps ensure that women in need are connected with all the community and social services resources available to them to support them both during and after their pregnancy.”

The pregnancy support initiative began with the late pro-life Democratic Gov. Bob Casey Sr. in the 1990s to “fight the poison of hopelessness with love.”
