A couple was arrested Monday in Florida after allegedly killing their infant son and storing his body in a freezer.

The Daily Mail reports Carlton “CJ” Mathis, 28, was shot by police while fleeing arrest.

Police said Mathis was believe to be armed. He allegedly threatened the driver of the vehicle with a handgun when a SWAT officer shot him early Monday at Bronson Villas and Villages in Florida, according to the report.

Police said they were chasing Mathis and his girlfriend, Amanda Oakes, 36, based on a tip that their infant son had been killed.

Here’s more from the report:

After Mathis and his girlfriend, 36-year-old Amanda Oakes, were taken into custody in Florida, police in Dothan, Alabama, learned that the couple had been staying at the In Town Suites in the 2800 block of Ross Clark Circle.

A search warrant was executed at that location and led to the discovery of the body of Oakes and Mathis’s six-month-old son, Carlton James Oakes in the freezer.

According to police, it appears the infant was in the freezer for five-six days.

The baby was taken to the Alabama Department of Forensic Science in Montgomery for autopsy to determine this cause of death, which is pending at this time. It is believed that the child was already deceased prior to being placed in the freezer, but police suspect foul play in his death.

The baby’s name was Carlton James Oakes, according to the report.

Authorities said Oakes and Mathis both face charges of abuse of a corps, and they will be extradited to Alabama. The couple likely also will face murder charges after a full autopsy is performed on their son.
