The Rhode Island Senate Judiciary Committee has scheduled a hearing on Planned Parenthood’s EXTREME abortion bill (2018 – S2163) for Thursday, May 31. The bill is scheduled for hearing only, and we do not anticipate movement on the bill this late in the session. It is however important to express your opposition to your state Senator by responding to this Action Alert and, for those who are not attending our simultaneously-scheduled Ancora banquet, to attend the hearing if you are able.
As we have told the Providence Journal and WPRI, Planned Parenthood’s extreme bill would make Rhode Island a haven for abortionists with virtually unrestricted and unregulated taxpayer-funded abortion-on-demand right up to the moment of birth — including partial-birth abortions and late-term dismemberment abortions on pain capable unborn children whose organs and body parts might then be harvested and sold, for which Planned Parenthood is presently being investigated by the Justice Department.
Among other very serious issues the bill would:
- Prohibit the State from restricting, that is, banning any “medically recognized” methods of abortion, even Partial-birth abortion.
- Strike down our longstanding “quick child” threshold, allowing abortions all the way up until birth, by leaving the determination of “fetal viability” solely to the discretion of the “attending physician,” that is, the abortionist being paid to kill the unborn child… abortionists like Kermit Gosnell.
- Prohibit state and local agencies from restricting the manner in which abortions are provided — other than enforcing standards the abortion industry sets for itself — putting local abortionists beyond any real regulatory oversight by the Department of Health and other state agencies.
- Weaken statutes prohibiting public funding for abortion and create a statutory presumption against funding restrictions that may be said to “restrict access” to abortion
Rather than considering this extreme bill, the General Assembly should immediately pass legislation to ban partial birth abortions and late-term dismemberment abortions in Rhode Island, to protect young Rhode Island girls from being transported across state lines for secret abortions to circumvent our longstanding parental consent law, and to protect infants born alive during an attempted abortion… all of which are also on the hearing agenda.
Please do not be complacent. Planned Parenthood’s extreme abortion bill has 12 sponsors in the Senate. Our ability to stop this bill has required a great amount of time, money, and political capital. Senators need to know that you and many pro-life Rhode Islanders are behind us. Please send your email now and invite others to do the same by visiting rirtl.org/action.
