Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee predicted Friday that the immigration “sanctuary city” push by some liberals could have unintended consequences for their larger political agenda.

Speaking on Fox News, Huckabee, a pro-life conservative, said if some cities and states defy federal laws on immigration, calling themselves “sanctuaries” for immigrants, others may start defying Roe v. Wade by banning abortions. Thus, they would become “sanctuary cities” for unborn babies.

“If these people in California can thumb their nose at a law they don’t like then I guarantee there will be a pro-life governor who will simply say no more abortions in our state and that’s just the way it is,” he said, The Daily Caller reports.

And pro-abortion lawmakers who support sanctuary cities for immigrants will not be happy if conservatives start implementing the same types of measures to protect unborn babies, he continued.

“I don’t think you will find people on the left and the Planned Parenthood supporters saying it’s fine with us. We do sanctuary cities, you ban abortion, all is good. It won’t turn out like that,” Huckabee said.

Not an advocate of breaking the law, Huckabee told Fox: “If we don’t like the laws we can change them, but we can’t ignore them. This is beyond liberal, conservative, Democrat, Republican. This is not ideology. This is a foundational principle of our constitutional form of government.”
