Authorities in India are investigating an audio recording of two men who allegedly raped a student and planned to force her to abort her unborn baby.
The Times of India reports a whistleblower who worked with the men, allegedly teachers at a secondary government school in Tehsil Raikot, alerted authorities about the alleged rape this week.
The informant alerted local police, Secretary of Education Punjab Krishan Kumar and others authorities after obtaining an audio recording of the men allegedly planning to force the girl to abort her unborn baby, according to the report.
In the audio recording, which the newspaper also obtained a copy of, the two men talked about how they could abort the female student’s unborn baby. According to the report, they discussed making her fall in such a way as to kill her unborn baby during school and then rushing her to the hospital in a feign of interest for her welfare.
The whistleblower identified the two men as teachers who he used to work with at the Tehsil Raikot school.
“I was posted in that school and got transferred about eight months ago. A few days back I received the audio clip in which I recognized the in-charge principal of school talking to another teacher about the case. I was shocked,” the whistleblower said.
He said he does not know if the men succeeded in forcing the girl to abort her unborn baby.
“As soon as I got to know about it, I raised the issue with authorities concerned. If these teachers are not punished they can target another girl too,” he said.
Authorities said they are investigating.
Late last year, authorities investigated a similar case when a student in India allegedly was raped by a teacher and school director and then forced to abort her unborn baby. Police said the school employees allegedly told the 18-year-old girl’s parents that she had to stay late for extra classes, and then sexually abused her.
Police said they arrested school director Jagdish Yadav and teacher Jagat Singh Gurjar and charged them with rape and procuring an abortion without the woman’s consent. The abortionist Rajnish Sharma and his wife, Kanan, of Shahpura, also were arrested for allegedly performing the abortion illegally and destroying evidence.
Sexual abuse is rampant in India, with 20,000 cases of sexual assaults reported in 2015, according to government data reported by AFP.

Some girls as young as 10 have been raped and then pressured to abort their unborn babies. In some cases, the young girls’ lives also were put at risk when their parents requested that they have late-term abortions past the country’s 20-week abortion limit.
In September, the Indian Supreme Court gave a 13-year-old girl permission to abort her unborn baby at 32 weeks; however, the girl gave birth to a live baby. The baby boy died two days later.
In May 2017, the high court also granted permission for a 10-year-old rape victim to have a late-term abortion when she was about 20 weeks pregnant. In that case, the girl’s stepfather allegedly raped her.
Forced and coerced abortions are a problem in the United States, as well as India. Often in cases of sexual abuse and sex trafficking, victims are forced to abort their unborn babies by their abusers.
