This Mayor Just Left the Democrat Party Because It’s So Radically Pro-Abortion

The Democratic Party is losing supporters because of its radical pro-abortion ideology. One of the latest to leave is Thomas P. Koch, the mayor of Quincy, Massachusetts, CNS News reports.

A Democrat for all his life, Koch said he can no longer support a party that wants to allow unborn babies to be aborted for any reason up to birth. He officially left the party this month.

He said the “last straw” for him happened last year when Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez said all Democrats should support abortion on demand.

“I said, okay, I guess that’s the last straw for me,” Koch told The Patriot Ledger. “The party platform is so far left on abortion it’s sickening.”

Koch said he is a Catholic who strongly believes that life begins at conception.

Here’s more from CNS:

Koch revealed that he changed his party registration not long after Perez’s remarks. He also disclosed that the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision was a major topic in his family when he was growing up. His father, Richard Koch, eventually stopped working for Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.) because of his switch to a pro-abortion position.

Political science professor Peter Ubertaccio at Stonehill College said he does not think Koch will lose votes because of the change.

“He’s kind of safely occupied a middle ground in Massachusetts politics,” Ubertaccio told the newspaper. “I don’t think most people in Quincy are going to bat an eyelash.”

The Democratic Party is becoming increasingly radical and out of touch with voters on the abortion issue. Some party leaders, backed by the abortion industry, are pushing for full support of abortion on demand up to birth from elected officials. The party’s top donor even said he will not donate to Democrat candidates who are pro-life.

Some party leaders are trying to unseat one of their own incumbents, U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski of Illinois, one of the last pro-life Democrats in Congress.

The Democratic Party has adopted an increasingly radical stance on abortion. In 2016, the DNC adopted a platform calling for full support of abortion for any reason up to birth as well as taxpayer funding of abortions. Both are widely unpopular positions among the general public.

Party leaders also have been debating whether to stop supporting pro-life Democrats like Lipinski altogether.

These moves put the party out of touch with a strong majority of its own voters.

Democrats for Life estimates more than 23 million Democrats in the U.S. are pro-life. Last year, Pew Research found that 28 percent of Democrats say abortion should be illegal in most or all cases. Marist/KofC polling also found that 23 percent of Democrats consider themselves pro-life and 40 percent say abortion is morally wrong.

Polls consistently show that most Americans do not want their tax dollars paying for abortions either. A Politico/Harvard University poll in October 2016 found that a majority of voters oppose taxpayer funding for abortions. Just 36 percent of likely voters supported the issue, while 58 percent opposed it. These findings are consistent with previous polls from various groups.

Most Americans also oppose most abortions and want laws to limit abortions or make them illegal. According to a recent Gallup poll, just 29 percent of Americans want unlimited abortion up to birth.
