The tragic accident saw first responders working to save the life of the mother as well as her unborn child.

The Daily Mail reports Desiree Strout, 27, was driving to a hospital near Skowhegan, Maine to give birth to her third child when the crash occurred. She was nine months pregnant and scheduled to be induced Monday morning, according to the report.

Emergency responders delivered baby in an emergency cesarean section on the roadside soon after the accident, according to the report.

Here’s more from the report:

Franny MacMichael Clark, a friend of the family, told centralmaine.com that she heard the new baby is a boy.

Skowhegan Police Chief David Bucknam told the news site that Strout was driving her 2005 Chevy Trailblazer when she hit black ice just out of town.

The vehicle skidded and hit a snow bank sideways, flipping over several times before coming down on the driver’s side on a frozen pond.

Another passenger, Harry Weeks, 29, possibly her husband, also was injured in the accident. Authorities did not say why Strout was driving instead of Weeks.
