A lone Illinois school board member took a stand Monday against textbooks that she said would “indoctrinate” students with a pro-abortion agenda.
The Chicago Tribune reports Jeanette Ward, a school board member for the Elgin Area School District U46 schools near Chicago, voted against the purchase of two textbooks Monday. Five other board members voted to approve them.
“The text repeatedly refers to the concept of ‘abortion rights,’” Ward said. “The truth is that abortion is not a right. There is no presentation of the right to life and liberty and the relationship of those rights to the abortion issue.”
The government and geography textbooks were chosen for advanced placement courses in the high school; they cost about $92,000 in taxpayer funds, the report states. According to the meeting agenda, the textbooks are “American Government: Roots and Reform” by O’Connor and Sabato (Pearson, 2018) and “The Cultural Landscape: Introduction to Human Geography” by Rubenstein (Pearson, 2017).
Among Ward’s concerns were issues related to abortion, the Second Amendment and LGBTQ issues. Particularly egregious, she said one textbook painted a “rosy” picture of life in China under the country’s oppressive population control measures. The one child policy and current two child policy have led to horrific human rights abuses, including forced abortions and forced sterilizations.
Here’s more from the report:
The books will “indoctrinate” students into believing there is just one position on these issues rather than exposing them to other points of view, Ward said.
District officials disputed her position. Robin Lenart, the district’s K-12 social studies coordinator, said the textbooks were fully vetted to ensure there was no bias.
“We trust that our teachers understand that they are teaching our students how to think and not what to think,” said Lenart. “Our goal isn’t to indoctrinate our students. … (These books are) not the only resource teachers use.”
Abortion activists try to indoctrinate young students in a number of ways, particularly through sexual education programs in public schools.
Planned Parenthood teaches sex education in public schools across the country, and promotes risky sexual behavior to vulnerable young teens at its clinics. In recent years, many concerned parents have convinced their school boards to reject the abortion group’s programs.
Planned Parenthood justifies starting sex-education at such a young age by stating, “Ideally, medical accurate sexuality education would be taught each year in our schools from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade.”
In 2014, Live Action release an undercover video series showing Planned Parenthood employees encouraging young teens to participate in sado-masochistic sexual activities, including gagging, whipping, asphyxiation, shopping at sex stores and viewing pornography.
The abortion giant also publishes multiple “resources” for children and teenagers concerning sexual activity. These materials claim to provide “age appropriate” sex education to children starting at age 4.
