A Pennsylvania woman is facing homicide charges after she allegedly threw her newborn son under her father’s porch over the weekend.

Pittsburgh Action News 4 reports the father of 23-year-old Brittany Robinson, of Shenango Township, Pennsylvania, found the baby’s body Sunday while he was decorating their home for Christmas.

Police said the man immediately called 911, not knowing that the dead baby was his grandson. Police said he found the baby’s body in a bag in a crawl space under the porch; he had been putting up Christmas lights when he made the shocking discovery.

Police arrested Robinson and charged her with homicide, abuse of a corpse, tampering with evidence and concealing the death of a child, according to the report.

“There was no question that the baby was born inside that house, the baby was killed inside that house and was concealed inside that house,” said Lt. Eric Hermick of the Pennsylvania State Police.

Here’s more from the local news:

Robinson told police she had severe stomach pains at work Friday and later gave birth at home, according to the criminal complaint. She told police the baby did not have a pulse and was not breathing, so she cleaned him off and wrapped him in a black T-shirt and put him in the bottom drawer of a dresser on the porch, according to the complaint.

Robinson said she went to work Saturday, could not sleep, then went to check on the baby, the complaint said. She said the baby still was not breathing so she moved him to the crawl space.

The bag containing the baby was found by her father while Robinson was at work Sunday, police said.

Police said Robinson told them she did not know she was pregnant, but they discovered that she had ordered abortion pills online in October. Police said she did not use the drugs.

The baby boy was 7 pounds and 19 inches long when he was born; and he appeared to be healthy, WPXI reports. Reports do not list the baby’s cause of death.

Robinson’s family did not know anything about her pregnancy, according to the report.

Infanticide, though not often discussed, still is a major problem across the United States. In the past few months, other newborns have been abandoned in Texas, New York state, Ohio and Georgia. Some died, while others were rescued.

Several other newborns were safely surrendered under safe haven laws this year in Indiana and Michigan.

All 50 states have safe haven laws to protect babies from abandonment and infanticide. Save haven laws allow mothers in crisis to leave their newborns in a safe environment, such as a hospital or fire station, without questions or repercussions.

Between 2004 and 2011, about 50 infants in Texas were surrendered under its safe haven law, according to the Dallas Morning News. National statistics are not kept about the number of babies saved through safe haven laws, though experts estimate the number to be in the thousands.
