While complaining about needing millions of taxpayer funding to help patients, the abortion chain Planned Parenthood is spending $3 million to back a pro-abortion candidate for Virginia governor.

The Washington Post reports the Planned Parenthood affiliate in Virginia is supporting Democrat Ralph Northam, a strong ally of the abortion industry.

A spokesman for pro-life opponent Republican Ed Gillespie said Northam has an “extreme” abortion position and supports the abortions of unborn babies “in the eighth or ninth month.”

Virginia Planned Parenthood spokeswoman Jennifer Allen called Northam a “champion” for supporting abortion on demand. He currently is the lieutenant governor of Virginia. The abortion group’s Virginia PAC endorsed Northam on Thursday.

“It’s really clear that Virginians want and need a fierce champion like Dr. Northam to stand up for them and to stand up for women’s health,” Allen said.

The abortion chain plans to spend $3 million to support the pro-abortion candidate for governor through radio and online advertising, canvassing and mailers, according to the report. The pro-abortion PAC also is supporting Justin Fairfax for lieutenant governor and Mark R. Herring for state attorney general.

According to the Post, polls show that the governor’s race is close.

Virginia’s current governor, Terry McAuliffe, has refused to protect unborn babies and moms from abortion and sided with the abortion industry instead. McAuliffe promised to be a “brick wall” against abortion regulations and to lower abortion clinic standards, thereby putting women’s health at risk. He vetoed a bill to defund the Planned Parenthood abortion business earlier this year and promised to veto a bill banning late-term abortions.

Planned Parenthood would like to see that type of abortion advocacy continue in the Virginia governor’s office.

Last fall, the abortion chain spent $38 million to support pro-abortion Democrat Hillary Clinton for president and other candidates. Most of the candidates lost. Then, earlier this year, it poured more than $700,000 into a closely-watched Georgia Congressional race, but the pro-abortion candidate it backed also lost to pro-life candidate Karen Handel.

Planned Parenthood receives close to half a billion taxpayer dollars annually to support its deadly work. It is the largest abortion business in the United States, killing more than 300,000 unborn babies every year.

Earlier this year, Planned Parenthood leaders refused an offer to receive an increase in taxpayer funding if they stopped doing abortions. CEO Cecile Richards called the offer “obscene and insulting,” making it very clear that abortions – not women’s health care – are what really are important to Planned Parenthood.
