Great, great news to end the week. Nine days after House majority whip Steve Scalise and four others were shot at a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia, Rep. Scalise “is out of the intensive care unit, a source familiar with his recovery said,” ABC News reported.
Matt Mika, who was the other most grievously injured person, was updated to “good” condition and is also out of the ICU, according to the New York Daily News.
We all knew soon after Rep. Scalise, Capitol Police officers David Bailey and Crystal Griner, Zack Barth, a congressional staffer to Texas Rep. Roger William, and Mika (a lobbyist) were shot, that Rep. Scalise and Mika (himself a former Hill staffer) were the most severely injured.
However, initial press accounts said almost matter of factly that Rep. Scalise was “expected to recover.” But soon we learned not only that Scalise ‘s condition was critical, before too long there were intimidations he would likely die.
Many, many people prayed for his recovery.
No one outside the family probably prayed harder for Rep. Scalise than pro-lifers. As NRLC President Carol Tobias wrote, “Steve is not just a friend to the pro-life movement and strong ally of National Right to Life. He is one of us. Saving babies is at the top of his priority list. He is one of the most dedicated and effective pro-life people in Congress.”

Just how serious his injuries were came out last week when Dr. Jack Sava, the director of trauma at the MedStar Washington Hospital Center, said that Scalise had
“sustained a single rifle wound that entered in the area of the left hip. It traveled directly across toward the other hip in what we call a trans pelvic gunshot wound. The round fragmented and did substantial damage to bones, internal organs and blood vessels.
“I understand he was awake on scene but by the time he was transported by helicopter to the MedStar trauma center, he was in shock. When he arrived, he was in critical condition with an imminent risk of death.”
Thank goodness that all five victims are recovering.
