The Times of India is reporting that authorities are investigating the botched abortion of a woman carrying a 21-old-baby for how it happened in an area on the Southeast coast of India and whether it was a case of female infanticide.
Reporter Ravindra Uppar explained
According to reliable sources, the woman from Markandeya Nagar underwent the procedure at a private hospital following pressure of the husband who wanted a boy as they already had two daughters.
Through illegal sex determination, the couple came to know that it was another girl and went in for an abortion.
According to the newspaper an Ayush (which stands for Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) doctor attempted the late-term abortion on May 6. But when the bleeding became uncontrollable “he referred the patient to KLE hospital.”
“It’s one of the most horrifying cases I’ve seen in all my service. Police and health departments need to investigate the case as it’s a dangerous trend of sex determination and abortion,” said Dr. Mudhol, the hospital’s medical superintendent.

Doctors saved the woman’s life by extracting the baby, along with the uterus. The abortion came to light when the hospital registered a complaint with police. Last Friday, police and health department officials visited KLE Hospital , following up the complaint by the hospital, in order to gather more information.
When she arrived at the hospital, the woman was in very critical condition. “There was heavy bleeding and the pulse rate and BP [blood pressure] were low,” according to Ravindra Uppar. “Dr. Mudhol said the patient required 12 bottles of blood. As it was an emergency, medical students donated 10 bottles to save the mother.”
According to the Times of India, the district health officer has been ordered “to conduct an inquiry to check whether it’s a case of female feticide. It would be revealed after taking the statement of the mother who is under treatment in hospital.”
