One of President Donald Trump’s pro-life nominees for a Cabinet position has received approval from the full United States Senate.

The Senate approved pro-life physician Ben Carson to lead the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Trump nominated the retired neurosurgeon, who ran against Trump in the wide field of Republican presidential primary candidates earlier this year.

After the vote, pro-life Senator Cory Gardner “Dr. Ben Carson’s commitment to work toward expanding affordable housing and finding solutions to assist those living in impoverished communities will serve our country well as he enters his new role as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. I look forward to working with him to address these challenges and helping all Coloradans and Americans succeed.”

Carson was confirmed by a 58-41 vote. He is expected to quickly be sworn in as secretary.

“I am thrilled to nominate Dr. Ben Carson as our next Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Ben Carson has a brilliant mind and is passionate about strengthening communities and families within those communities,” Trump said in a statement at the time of his nomination.

Carson had made his strong pro-life stance clear on the campaign trail. In December, he blamed “peer pressure” for American’s acceptance of abortion as a “woman’s right.”

“Someone has tried to make this into an issue of women’s rights,” the former neurosurgeon told a pro-life crowd in Nevada. “What about the baby? You know, it’s one of the most sacred relationships in the universe, a mother and that child inside of her.

“How have we become so distorted that we have managed to convince women that that baby inside of her is her enemy and that she has a right to kill it,” Carson said.

In a November interview with Breitbart News, Carson said he would “use the bully pulpit” to work to restore a culture of life in the United States if elected president.

Carson also said he supports repealing Roe v. Wade. He also has been very vocal about his opposition to Obamacare.
