The Indiana state House today approved a bill that will tell women how the abortion pill can be reversed in order to save their baby if they change their mind after taking it.

House Bill (HB) 1128 passed the Indiana House of Representatives by a vote of 53-41. Authored by Rep. Ron Bacon (District 75), HB 1128 notifies Hoosier women that a chemical abortion may be able to be reversed if she changes her mind shortly after beginning the abortion.

HB 1128 also makes minor changes to the state’s termination of pregnancy report, strengthens health and safety standards at abortion facilities and provides help to women being sexually trafficked.

“There are babies in Indiana alive today because their mothers regretted starting a chemical abortion,” said Sue Swazye Liebel, Vice President of Public Affairs for Indiana Right to Life. “We are pleased HB 1128 passed the Indiana House and we will advocate strongly for its passage in the Indiana Senate. The main goal of HB 1128 is to provide information. We thank the hundreds of Hoosiers who contacted their Indiana representatives to pass HB 1128.”

On Feb. 15, Indiana House Public Policy committee members heard testimony regarding abortion pill reversals. Testifying to the medical science and the success of using an abortion pill reversal protocol were two Indiana doctors, Casey Reising, M.D. of Indianapolis and Christina Francis, M.D. of Fort Wayne. Both have helped women go on to deliver healthy babies after they regretted taking the first pill in the chemical abortion process. Committee members also heard from a woman who participated in the abortion pill reversal process after regretting her decision to abort. She now has a healthy son.

Francis refuted claims that abortion reversal is “junk science” in a column published by the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel today, “The abortion pill reversal protocol involves giving women large doses of progesterone in order to counteract the first pill. Abortion proponents argue any woman wishing to stop her abortion after the first pill should just skip the second pill and do nothing. They say in at least 30 percent of cases her pregnancy will continue. But the abortion pill reversal protocol offers success in at least 60 percent of cases; shouldn’t women be aware that treatment using progesterone to reverse an abortion exists?

“Progesterone is safe. It’s been studied. In fact, the founder of the Abortion Reversal Network, Dr. George Delgado, applied to his Institutional Review Board for approval to do a research study on the abortion pill reversal protocol. He was told that was unnecessary. Approval isn’t needed because progesterone is not an experimental drug. The forms of progesterone being used in abortion pill reversal are already FDA-approved for use throughout pregnancy.”
