Boy Doing Great After Doctors Told His Parents Five Times to Abort Him Because He’d Have No Brain

Last Friday Britain’s Channel Five broadcast a new documentary, “The Boy Who Grew a New Brain,” updating and chronicling the incredible story of Noah Wall, born with a virtually empty cranial cavity but now with a brain that has grown to 80% of normal!

We wrote about Noah last October in the context of what was then a new documentary, “The Boy Without a Brain.”

“We were offered termination five times,” his father Rob, said. “It was never an option for us. To me, we wanted to give Noah that chance of life.”

Here’s the latest from Zoe Romanowsky, beginning with the background:

In utero, Noah had developed a rare complication of spina bifida where his skull filled with fluid, crushing his brain down into a “thin sliver of tissue,” according to the UK’s Mirror. His parents — Shelly and Rob — were advised to abort him on five occasions. They refused. After Noah’s birth, an open wound in his back was closed and a shunt was installed to drain the fluid from his brain.

Shelly and Rob picked out a baby coffin for Noah, but they also never stopped believing he was anything less than a great gift.

Noah’s brain, in other words, has filled up the space formerly occupied by fluids.

Noah is now a “chatty” 4-year-old.

But…how in the world could Noah “grow a new brain”? Well, for starters, according to Romanowsky, “They took him home and the entire family surrounded him constantly with love, affection, and 24-7 care. Noah’s brain began to grow. And grow. And grow some more.”

“One key to Noah’s miraculous mental advancement is his family. Shelly, Rob, and sister Steph (23) “work hard to always be around him,” writes Fr. Mark Hodges. “They continually keep his brain stimulated to aid its growth.” He adds, “The Walls call this constant cognitive stimulation Noah’s ‘brain-training.’”

Put simply, Noah is “a remarkable child with two remarkable parents,” his neurosurgeon, Dr. Claire Nicholson told the Mirror [www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/boy-no-brain-stuns-doctors-9778554].

This cheerful optimism extends beyond furthering his intellectual skills. (Noah is learning to read and write.) After surgeries on Noah’s hips, his father says Noah will walk, with or without mechanical aids.
