French medical doctors observed a rare phenomenon recorded only 26 other recorded cases in the history of obstetric medicine, the Washington Post reports. An ultrasound image revealed little baby’s legs had ruptured the uterine wall extending beyond the boundaries of the womb.
“The fetal legs did not cause the rupture,” Pierre Emmanuel Bouet, an obstetrician at the University of Angers Hospital Center said. He elaborated on how five previous C-sections likely led to a tearing of the uterine wall, resulting in the uterus failing to expand during the pregnancy leading to the tearing.
The abnormality was investigated further via MRI, revealing the diagnosis and ruling out the possibility that the baby had kicked so hard its foot penetrated the uterus.
Medical professionals say that such abnormalities usually result in significant pain for the mother, but in this case, the mother was asymptomatic. However, they remained concerned for the possibility the uterus may rupture leading to internal bleeding and possible premature birth at only 22 weeks.
Though abortion certainly could have been an option, as the potential consequences for the health of the mother were potentially dire, the couple chose to give birth by C-section eight weeks later. A baby boy was born, healthy albeit premature.

Despite the abnormal ultrasound image, one can no doubt make out the essence of humanity, and undeniably realize that this isn’t just a “clump of cells,” as some claim, but truly a baby, a tiny human being who deserves the same chance at life that we ourselves were granted.
