Just a few months after “Glee” actress Naya Rivera revealed that she had an abortion without telling her future husband, the couple is filing for divorce.

Extra reports Rivera filed divorce documents to dissolve her marriage to actor Ryan Dorsey on Nov. 15 in Los Angeles. Rivera and Dorsey were married for two years, and they have a 14-month-old son.

The couple also conceived another baby before they were married. At the time, the two had split up after dating for a while. In her new book “Sorry Not Sorry: Dreams, Mistakes and Growing Up,” the 29-year-old actress said she did not tell Dorsey about the baby; instead, she had an abortion. It happened in 2010 while she was working on the hit show, and she said she wanted to focus on her career.

Later, when she and Dorsey got back together and married, Rivera told him about the abortion.

Rivera told The Real about their conversation in September: “He said, you know, in the short time that we dated, I wish that I could have done something to make you feel like you could have trusted me with that information because I would have loved to have been there with you.’ And I was like, ‘God, that’s amazing. Thank you so much.’”

“… I think it was the kindest and the best thing that any man could have ever said in that situation. And it just made me love him that much more, so I’m thankful for that,” she continued.

Though Rivera has defended her abortion, she also admitted that aborting her unborn child was extremely painful, both physically and emotionally. And Rivera said she has never really healed.

“It was the worst experience of my life,” she wrote in her book. Later, she added, “I don’t think I ever emotionally healed from the abortion, which is why it is so mind-blowing that some people think having an abortion is the carefree girl’s No. 1 choice to keep on partying.”

Dorsey has been silent publicly about the abortion; but, like many fathers, he probably experienced emotional pain from the abortion, too.

Hollywood marriages are notorious for being short, but the abortion could be a factor in the celebrity couple’s divorce. Rivera and Dorsey did not mention details in a statement about their breakup, but they said they plan to continue making their son their first priority.

A 2009 study published in the medical journal “Public Health” found that abortions, in comparison to giving birth, can lead to serious relationship problems for couples.

The study found that an abortion within a current relationship causes more arguing when discussing future children and more domestic violence — respective increased risks of 116 percent and 196 percent. Researchers also found that post-abortive couples were more likely to argue about money and relatives, and more likely to report feelings of jealousy.

“These results suggest that abortion may play a vital role in understanding the etiology of some relationship problems,” the authors wrote.
