Police in India are looking for a man who allegedly befriended a teen girl over the internet, raped her and then forced her to have an abortion.

India TV News reports the 17-year-old girl reported the incident to police earlier this week. According to police, the teen said she met the 21-year-old man on a social networking site in January.

“The girl accepted his friendship request on the site and they would often chat online. In one of these chats, he promised to marry her and asked her to come to Pune to meet him,” police said, according to the Times of India.

The teen accused the man of taking her to a lodge and raping her. Later, police said the teen discovered she was pregnant and told the man. According to the allegations, he forced her to abort their unborn child and then abandoned her.

According to police, the teen said she went to the man’s parents, but they also ignored her.

Police said they have not arrested the man yet.

These cases are not rare. Several studies have found links between abortion and abuse. According to a study in the medical journal PSOL Medicine, “Overall, the researchers’ findings support the concept that violence can lead to pregnancy and to subsequent termination of pregnancy, and that there may be a repetitive cycle of abuse and pregnancy.”
