Babies in the womb can do some amazing things, and former Marine Robert Cooper found that out when he watched his unborn child on an ultrasound screen on Monday.

Yahoo News reports the 12-week unborn baby lifted its arm to its head in a “salute” as parents Cooper and Mehgan Merriott watched stunned.

“While they were doing the sonogram the baby was actually sleeping on its side and they tried several times to get him/her to wake up to take the picture that they needed to take,” Merriott said. “The baby didn’t want to wake up, then threw [its] hand in the air and then threw it back down.”

The Columbus, Georgia couple said their doctor and nurses shared the joyful moment with them. They all laughed together as they watched the unborn baby, still so early in the pregnancy, move and react just like born babies do.

“I almost cried,” Merriott said. “I thought it was sweet.”

She said her grandparents plan to frame and hang the photo of the baby’s “salute” in honor of family members who have served in the military.

It was a simple moment for the family, but one that serves as a reminder to us all about how real and valuable an unborn baby’s life is.

In many parts of the world, abortion is legal for any reason up to 12 weeks of pregnancy; in America, it’s legal for any reason up to 20 to 24 weeks in most states. By just 12 weeks of pregnancy, unborn babies already have their major organs in place, and brainwaves can be detected. They have tiny fingers and fingerprints, and some of them even begin sucking their thumbs.

The information we have from ultrasound images, scientific research and more confirms that these unborn babies, even at the earliest stages of existence, are human beings who have value and deserve life.
