White House Won’t Say if Obama Agrees With Democrat Platform Promoting Free Abortions

In a surprising move, the White House backed down this week when asked if pro-abortion President Barack Obama supports the Democratic Party’s new extreme pro-abortion platform.

Among the most radical language in the new platform is a call to force taxpayers to pay for abortions – an unpopular move among the general public, but a top goal of the abortion industry.

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton promised Planned Parenthood that she would work to end the Hyde Amendment and bring about taxpayer funded abortions. Her vice presidential running mate, Tim Kaine, just flip-flopped on the issue and also now supports taxpayer funding of abortion.

But The Daily Signal reports White House spokesman Eric Schultz said the Obama administration has a “longstanding view” against taxpayer funding of abortion.

“I don’t believe we have changed our position on the Hyde Amendment, but if we do, you’ll be the first to know,” Schultz told The Daily Signal. “We have a longstanding view on this, and I don’t have any changes in our position to announce today.”

The statement is surprising given Obama’s record on abortion. Obama has been called the most pro-abortion president in U.S. history. His administration recently refused to stop California from forcing churches to pay for abortions through employee health insurance plans.

He also has been a consistent supporter of the nation’s largest abortion chain, Planned Parenthood, and the hundreds of millions of federal tax dollars that it receives. And Planned Parenthood CEO Cecile Richards has been a frequent guest at the White House during Obama’s presidency.

As one of his first acts as president, Obama also overturned the Mexico City Policy, which prohibits federal tax dollars from going to international groups that do abortions. And his legacy legislation, the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, has been exposed for funding abortions with tax dollars. Obama falsely claimed that it would not.

Through the years, polls have consistently found that most Americans do not support taxpayer funding of abortions or late-term abortions. A new Marist poll found that more than two-thirds of Americans oppose taxpayer funding of abortion, including a majority of women and a majority of people who identify as pro-choice.
