Pro-abortion groups like Planned Parenthood claim to be champions for the underprivileged, but the reality is that they are largely backed by the “1 percent” – the richest people in the world.
A new report from Inside Philanthropy details how some of the richest men in the world are using their money to influence political and legal battles over abortion.
Some of Planned Parenthood’s top donors include Warren Buffett and George Soros. According to Forbes, Buffett is the third richest man in the world with a net worth of about $60.8 billion. Soros ranks at No. 23 on the list with $24.9 billion.
The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation, named after Warren’s late wife, gave more than $35 million to Planned Parenthood in 2014 alone, according to the report. In the past five years, the Buffetts have given tens of millions to the abortion chain, the news outlet found.
The Buffetts also are the “single largest funder” of the National Abortion Federation, having given $23 million in 2014, according to the report. The family also regularly gives huge grants to other pro-abortion groups, including NARAL and the National Women’s Law Center, the report states.
The Buffetts’ foundation heavily influenced the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision to overturn a Texas law that required abortion facilities to meet basic health and safety standards. The Buffetts funneled money into a Texas study that supposedly showed how the new law was hurting women’s access to abortion and resulting in more self-induced abortion attempts. A number of researchers pointed to serious flaws in the study, but the liberal U.S. Supreme Court justices used it as evidence anyway when they overturned the law.
Soros, another one of the world’s richest, gave Planned Parenthood $13.2 million in 2012 alone through his Open Society Foundations, the report states. Since 2010, the Soros foundation gave at least $5 million more to the abortion group, according to the report.
Hewlett-Packard co-founder William Hewlett’s foundation also is a huge donor to pro-abortion groups. The group gave Planned Parenthood more than $10 million and the National Abortion Federation more than $4 million since 2010, with additional donations to a number of other pro-abortion groups, the report states.

The JPB Foundation is another huge donor, having given $6 million to the abortion giant Planned Parenthood in 2012 and 2013, the report states. Barbara Picower, the head of the foundation, is “the widow of the biggest beneficiary of the Bernard Madoff Ponzi scheme,” according to Forbes.
Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, also has been known to give big money to Planned Parenthood. The sixth richest man in the world, Zuckerberg donated $992 million in 2014 to a group that funnels some of its money to Planned Parenthood, LifeNews reported.
There is big money behind pro-abortion politics, but the 1 percent can only do so much. The abortion industry may get its power from the 1 percent’s money, but the pro-life movement’s power is in its grassroots base, in everyday people who are fighting for unborn babies’ lives.
Despite all the money that the pro-abortion 1 percent has dedicated to abortion, they have not been able to buy off the general public. More Americans are learning the truth about abortion and its effects on the unborn baby and the family. As a result, abortion numbers are dropping, abortion facilities are closing, and more women are choosing life for their unborn babies.
